UK meteorology

Well snow chains got me up the hill with no problems but still an extra 2 hours to work. Think we got Chris' snow from yesterday! Interesting thing was the temperature; -2.5 to -4°C the whole journey. Proper nesh.

It looks like a picture postcard but not so nice if you have to be out in it. Snow chains are a great idea and everyone should have a set and know how to use them.

As promised...
Today

After a widespread severe frost this morning today will be very cold with temps struggling to get above freezing in many places, exacerbated by a strong E/SE wind, as a pool of very cold unstable air moves west over the UK. This will produce frequent and heavy snow showers in Scotland and the north and east of England with some large accumulations, and some along the south west coast. Perhaps on occasion longer periods of snow from troughs embedded in the flow.

To get an idea how cold and unusual this airmass is it's worth a closer look at the 1000-500m thickness, 850mb temp anomaly and a forecast sounding.

Snow showers in these areas will continue overnight with some drifting in the strong wind whilst elsewhere it will be clear resulting in very severe frost

The snow showers will persist in the north through the morning whilst easing elsewhere but by 1200 fronts associated with storm Emma are approaching from the south and already bringing snow and strong winds to southern areas. The area of snow moves north though the afternoon and evening over the west country into Wales bringing with blizzard conditions to some areas whilst elsewhere it will be another very cold day with pretty horrendous wind chill

The snow and strong winds continue in the south and west overnight and into Friday morning when outbreaks of freezing rain may well enter into the equation but the north ward movement of the front slows considerably as storm Emma recurves to the west. Remaining very cold elsewhere

I was out and about late last night and the top lane was touch and go, lots of powdery fresh snow over ice. Even the snow chains lost it going down to mine fortunately on a straight bit. Farmer left a trailer next to my gaff - still couldn't get the tractor past my garden!

It will be the external pipework that is frozen so should be fine, I don't think they are copper . It's just a waiting game now and no unnecessary water usage ,so my shave is on hold!
Remember don't melt the yellow snow for water...

Today's thoughts
Today the continuing evolution takes on another phase so best to start with a quick appraisal of where we stand this morning.

Currently the is a very severe frost with heavy snow showers still persisting, predominately still in the north/north east

But as can be seen from the above fax Emma is getting organized and by 1800 is in the Bay of Biscay moving north as are also the associated fronts with the upper and warm fronts having already encroached the south.

These are the bare bones, and sets the scene for what is set to be a day of atrocious and dangerous weather in many areas of the UK today, Heavy snow showers will persist in the central belt of Scotland and further south into north east England with blizzard conditions in the strong wind giving further accumulations and feeling bitterly cold. further south snow showers will also figure, particularly in the east but not as concentrated bu also bitterly cold. Then we come to Emma and the fronts and these are already bringing snow to the south coast This area of snow will then track north and west during the day with blizzard conditions in places in the very strong winds and producing large accumulations of snow, possibly 10-20 cm in many areas and double that on the moors. And remaining bitterly cold all day.

Overnight the showers will persist in the north with perhaps the snow in the south west easing but with a significant risk of freezing rain and with the strong winds persisting still feeling bitterly cold.

During Friday the squally showers will still persist in the north east with further snow and ice in the south west where the winds will ease somewhat but still feeling bitterly cold apart from Cornwall where the milder air has encroached.

Futher thoughts from Malcolm:
Further to my post above the updated fax chart has Storm EMMA 977mb just south of Ireland at 00 Saturday with the occlusion accompanied by snow nudging north over North Wales and the Midlands. The GFS is pretty much in agreement with the position of the front and snow but not the depth of the low.

So not being sure how much credence we can give to the GFS will stick to the Icon and during Saturday the snow showers will persist in the north with wintry showers further south and still feeling very cold in the strong wind but warmer air (relatively) has encroached in the south

For an overview of the where this going a quick glance at the 850mb anomaly and wind streams could well be good news for many people assuming the GFS is reading this correctly of course
