Photo of the day

I looked at this picture and before I saw where it was I thought that architecture (and decay) looks like It could be in Bradford. Sadly I was right. The joys of living in a Northern city (but it makes for interesting photos though).

Cities are changing ...

That whole area of Bradford was the warehousing district, some of which has been converted to residential and others simply demolished and new office buildings put in place. There doesn't seem to be any continuation of that from the city centre, and so there's a dead zone between, say, Scorex House and Vertu KIA/Honda.

There are plans to demolish the NCP by the interchange and demolish the Kirkgate Shopping Centre. While I am quite a fan of brutalist architecture, I'm certainly not a fan of preservation for the sake of preservation. I see the old M&S at the side of Kirkgate has gone now. I think plans are for a much more pedestrian and cycling-friendly city and with the clean air zone that comes into effect shortly, Bradford is likely to be a very green city.

But, cities have to have purpose ...

Bradford is still a fascinating city and if you plot a path through the now very aggressive homeless, you can't walk for more than a few feet without happening upon another grand building from Bradford's affluent past. There does seem to be a gradual clearing of moden throughout the city and it has opened up to become a quite fascinating walking city ... if you can get past the aggressive homeless.

... I just wonder what purpose it will serve?

Perhaps it's future is in some lamentation of its glorious past as one of the world's richest cities, grand Victorian buildings standing as tombstones interspaced with huge urban parks. I don't see what else could be built in place of what they're demolishing as both shopping and the notion of a CBD are now well gone.

How did you managed that perfect exposure with that bright background?
Metering on the face alone - then standing back and composing. The meters in M Leicas are surprisingly centre weighted, depending of course on the lens used. Not Nikon 80/20 sensitivity but not far off with a 35mm on a M6. That - and let the film soak it up. :) - I.
