the razor has been delivered safely today along with a bunch of blades and samples.

thanks so much, @BBS, you're a gentleman and it was really nice to meet you and have a quick chat.

I've already shaved today but looking forward to trying the fatboy in a couple of days. first impressions are that it's really solidly built and the settings have a very satisfying click to them. the only adjustable I've tried is a futur clone where the settings are fluid. never tried a butterfly razor either so will be interested to see if the blade is held rigidly but it seems like it will.

I innocently go to drop off the box, and walk away with a shavette, aftershave and MORE blades. Thanks @semi!

really nice, smooth first shave this morning. started on 6 but clicked down to 5 after the first pass. I might turn it up when it's not the first shave on the blade. again, my impressions are that it feels really solidly built and has a nice weight in the hand. I'd probably prefer a slightly longer handle personally. the blade was held really well, no chatter feeling at all. the guard is the same as the tech I have and it feels just as smooth and secure as that.

I imagine this is somewhat similar to a fat handled tech or a superspeed or flair tip, though adjustable and heavier. I wonder which settings on this the others most compare to in terms of aggression and if most of the Gillettes are like mid settings on the fatboy.

thanks so much @dodgy, it's really generous of you to lend this out to the whole forum and I really appreciate it.

I'm really glad I got the opportunity to try such an iconic razor and I can see why it's a classic.

Hi there,

Nice post....thanks. Glad you had a smooth ride. Let me speak to some things you mentioned, keeping in mind shaving related preferences and ideas can be all over the board.

To me, there's a difference between DE razors 'feel' and how much attention's needed during the shave to keep the lather pure white. Those fixed head other models you mentioned don't fit me like a dialed in Fatboy and I agree with you about most others of that type will be a middle adjustable FB number around 5, but others can be lots more 'effective' than the highest FB setting.

Matter of fact, I prefer that model to the Super Adjustables and Slims because of the slightly more rounded head. However, those two are just as popular performers in polls as a Fatboy, even though they are wrong thinkers. Crazy eh?

Luckily for you, there IS a razor that shaves much like a Fatboy and also has a longer handle, plus it's even gold plated! Nice eh? Yeah, a Toggle would work for you too.

Oh, let me just mention one important and rare feature of this razor. Whatever the reason, I can use the sharpest blade such as a Feather without irritation or extra worry.

All these points I agree with.
The Slim Adjustable is for me too long, too slim and the head design less effective. Shame they stuck with that type (I think) on subsequent models like the Super Adjustable (and again too long and thin although there was briefly a short handle one I haven't tried).
I had the privilege of trying a Toggle many years ago. I forget who lent me it (may have been you, @dodgy - if so thank you!) and it performed as well as the Fatboy. Considerable rarer though!

I have sensitive skin and a thick wiry beard and prefer a sharp and smooth blade and always try out any new-to-me blade in the Fatboy.

third shave today went really well. clicked up to setting 7 since it was the third shave for the blade as well. I got even closer on the second shave but today's was still really comfortable and smooth. I'm going to try a Gillette blade next, maybe a green or yellow.

went with a green super stainless blade today which paired really well. I also went back down to 6 after the first pass. I know these settings aren't that far apart in aggression but I'm learning I don't need a really aggressive razor to get great results. I'm going to go back to setting 5 on Tuesday night and see if I can replicate that great second shave. that seems to work best for me, especially when shaving daily.

fifth shave today and another really enjoyable, close, smooth shave. four days of growth mowed down no problem on setting 7 for the first pass then 5 for the second and third. I loaded a fresh 7oclock yellow that worked really well.

who's next on the list? anyone else in Scotland want a shot before it gets sent back down south?
