Finding a suitable bowl

I have, over the past 5 or 6 years, relied on the trusty plastic bowl the Proraso Sensitive Shaving Soap comes in. It was free, it does the job well; smaller soaps (such as 60g Haslinger) fit in the smaller bottom part quite well, the larger soaps (for example the 125g Wool Fat) sit on the top section until they get used up enough to fit in the smaller section. And in all cases, the lid goes on and gives me somewhere to put my brush without taking up more shelf space.

The problem I've now got a Saponificio Varesino Tundra Artica Shaving Soap Refill 150g. Which smells lovely, but is too large to fit in the bowl, it's about 1cm (just less than half an inch) too large in the diameter.

So the question is: what bowl/soup in a bowl should I get which is large enough to fit the 150g puck in?

For storage? Try tinware direct. They have a lot of cheap sample tins in quite a few sizes

Get your kitchen grater out & reshape it to fit:)

How does it respond to the brush once grated? I had always thought you'd get individual grating lumps stuck in your brush?
Once you grate your puck you then compress it really firmly into the container with your thumbs or the back of a big spoon, so hard that the soap reforms back into a solid lump so there should be no bits of grated soap to get stuck to your brush.
You've got to really press down on the soap, you know when you have pushed hard enough when your thumbs feel painful!!! :) edit: make sure to really clean your hands before doing this so you don't contaminate your soap when pressing.

That is an option I'll resort to if I don't get a suitable bowl, but it's a hard soap and I'm not sure how being grated will effect it.

I had also thought of finding a way to cut it into three or something, then I could get it to fit in the bowl no problem.
I would drill a hole right through centre of soap, then put nut and bolt through it(might need washers to help hold)
Then put in drill and spin it down with either a chisel, grater or something of that nature until it fits.
Let me know how you get on.

What sort of containers, jars, bowls etc do you lot normally grate your soaps into?

Well, I used to buy screw top tubs (aluminium) but the last few containers have been stainless steel rice bowls / cup's with handles, I guess anything will do as long as it's wide enough to work your brush around the soap, check out eBay for ideas.
