I didn't realise they did a black version. I assume the crown at 4 oclock rotates the inner scale similar to a Flightmaster? I've been thinking of one of these for a while but a bit of extra cash has arrived so a Grand Seiko has become a possibility.
 
Correct - the crown at 4 o'clock is free to rotate (not screwed in or of push-pull type) and rotates the outmost 'scale' circle in the dial.

Owning a GS would be great, they are terrific watches and I wish you to make the right choice for your style and wrist.

I had one, a Ti special Spring Drive model, purchased it in Osaka back in 2013.
Sold it foolishly couple of years later, but at the time I was after APs, Pateks and Lange - so literally any action could be justified.

Not so sure about that, but you can find out with a bit of reading.
From a person I regularly consult and fully trust on hi-end watches, if given the option between Spring Drive and Hi-Beat you must certainly go for the latter....
