26 October -

Prep: Hot shower; Lucky Tiger Face Wash.
Pre-Shave: Lather & Wood Pre-Shave Oil - Sandalwood
Soap: Buff City Soap - Shave and a Haircut
Brush: Simpson Trafalgar T3
Razor: Merkur 23C
Blade: Gillette Nacet, 1st use
After-Shave: Lather & Wood After-Shave Balm - Sandalwood; Three Cats and a Broom Big Bad Beard Oil

Tut, tut; it looks like rain...

The somber gray, and the sound of rain, against the windows suited my melancholy. Several days down the oubliette of chronic mental illness had left me in pronounced disrepair. With some judicious hoarding, I found the spoons to shower and shave. I was in no mood for conversation, so I passed on my usual podcast (The History of Philosophy), and put on The Nationals Sleep Well Beast.

It was my first go with the Simpson's brush, as well as the Nacet blade, so I stuck with the rest of my normal routine. The brush was a wonderful improvement over the little Satin Tip I've been using. It loaded and lathered beautifully, and held heat well. I've found this soap a little finicky, as I've been learning, but this brush seemed to have its own finesse.

I found the Nacet a little "toothy," much the same as my experience with Personnas. I definitely owe it another couple of shaves, especially when I'm in a better state, before I reach a final decision.

Overall, it was a pleasant shave. Both the process and the end helped. It didn't make everything right, but it made it a little less wrong.

Hello mate - unless you are a fan of writing in the style of noir - I am slightly concerned by your post - it is difficult to know whether you are sharing or taking the piss. If it is the former - feel free. The spelling indicates American English. Yours - I.

I wasn't trying to yank anyone's chain. If my overflorid prose, or anything else about the post, was offensive or off-putting, I sincerely apologize.

Not offensive, concerning maybe. This might be a forum about a relatively mundane activity that we elevate to a luxurious pastime, but like most hobby fora, it is a community. Communities care about their members, so, if you need to talk about stuff, you can do it here. I doubt you're the only one here who's going through the stuff you're going through. Just saying.

And the theme for this particular shave was 'What is a DE?'

IMG_20201025_211816.jpg

Double Entry - Ikon B1 SB
Doubtful Entities - Gillette Rubie
Dark Energy - Czech and Speake No.88 soap
Delectable Entrails - Yaqi Dandelion
Delightful Enema - Hawkins and Brimble
Dog Ends - Czech and Speake No.88

'And then I came up with the formula E=DE2. Then realised I'd got it slightly wrong. Dreadful error.'

There in the back of the shaving armoury vault lies a couple of sadly neglected DE razors. There is a third but my 'Birth Year Fat Boy' (a nameful reflection of myself) sits on display in my cubby hole for bits of shit. @Rob998 knows where it is as he often steals from there.

My shaving world over the past year or two has mainly revolved around SE razors in my endless quest for SE Zen in the art of shaving. But ocassionally I feel the need to remove the neglect and give the DE's a run. After all the Ikon B1 is the razor I raved about for long enough as being the pinnacle of the term 'close'.

Voila ici

Firstly team soap. The Dandelion is a lovely piece of cheap brilliance and a very easy to love item. I think the days of it being the Welsh national flower have been lost in the past. It is a very nice leak green though. The C&S 88 has no problems lathering and a nice quality mass of shaving medium quickly appears. The only negative I can place against it is the lack of that superb 88 rose scent. In fact it is rather more like a cardboard scent if such exists. A kind of eau de thick brown paper.

On to the razor itself. I was rather surprised that despite not having used the Ikon for a while the old muscle memory still remained and it didn't take long to fling around merrily. For an object which is basically one piece of vicious shit in the world of razors it can certainly be a smooth operator if you give it respect. There is a lot of Blade on display here and in this case a new to me Gillette Rubie. My final verdict on the blade is still up in the air. I can't say it is the best I have used in the Ikon and the Lodz is a far better act. But I will give it a second chance later in the week and see if my single mindedness can be swung. Overall a very welcome return with the B1 and end results are as to be expected. A close and smooth finish like few other DE's I have met but with a few weepers which I am going to put down to the blade.

I think my general thoughts though are that I am glad to have gone down the SE route. For me they deliver quality shaves in a fraction of the time and there is something more confidence inspiring about them. And less shitting about with blade choice.

The 'Big But'

Despite my love for being single (bladed that is) I still can't think of any razor in my little world which gets as close as the B1 even if it does push the boat a little. It sort of teeters on the edge of sensible and irrational, skin and no skin. To be sensibly rational I would never shave my nads with it.

'And I will cut your fucking bollocks off'

So I shall end this shave on something a little more spiriting than an angry lady with castrative thoughts. In fact..... I will end as usual with some pretty Japanese ladies. What more could the world ever want?

Soap Phoenix & Beau Spitfire

Shave with razor paired with blade was ok, acceptable smooth and comfort for 3passes. Between bbs to dfs result. Excellent post and aftershave. Notice some creepers later. Really nice soap scent.

It's not unusual for individuals to feel morose at this time of year.
But, the OP gave off an alarming signal in his original post.
If he was being serious, it is important that he seeks help with his mental wellbeing.
We all have struggles in life, and it's a good thing that mental health is being recognised more than it was in the past.
Some people have more well defined coping strategies than others and are able to better deal with their situation.
A large proportion find it very difficult to take the initial steps in seeking help and advice, which can add another facet to their plight - shame in admitting their issues to others.
