Steve Woodhead scuttle sizing?

Hello everyone!

Would anyone have one of these and be able to shed some light on sizing when using a certain brush?

Basically I'll be the owner of a Chubby 2 soon and want a scuttle thats small enough to move about easily as it won't be kept in the bathroom but big enough that the big chubby 2 will excel in without lather being flung over the sides.

In other words, would a medium do the job for me or would I have to opt for a large one?

I know sizes are listed on the website but that doesnt really give me an idea of how a certain brush (that I dont have yet) would perform in that size of scuttle.

Do you add boiling water to yours or just hot water from the tap and do you let that sit for a few minutes before starting a lather?

I have a Tall Large in Ivory, and it really is LARGE and solid. They are very good scuttles, and being one-piece, are quieter and easier to use than others where the inner is separate to the outer, and rattles around.

It pays to be a little careful with the Large scuttle (and probably the others as well). It's heavy when empty, and obviously a lot more so when filled with water. My impression is that, if it's dropped in a porcelain washbasin, the basin is likely to come off worse. I have so far avoided this.

Sounds like it quite a unit. I suppose the downside about an all in one piece is the cleaning side of it. Can't just take the bowl out and rinse.

Cleaning the inner isn't a problem. Just treat it as a shaving bowl, rinse out any lather and soap residues, and at the same time, empty the heating water. As for the "water jacket", I try to ensure that it only ever has plain hot water (boiled or tap) in it, and avoid getting soapy water (from that in the washbasin) in there. Even if it did sometimes see some soap there, swilling hot water round should keep it clear. Squinting into mine, I see no build-up, of either soap or limescale, and I've had it for some years now.

I love scuttles, I have 4, 2 brush scuttles and 2 standard, including a large Woodhead scuttle.

I wouldn't put boiling water but very hot tap water is OK, 70°C is OK

Some people put it in the microwave to warm the scuttle up, I simply fill the basin with enough how water to keep the scuttle nice and warm.

I mostly use my brush scuttles now.

I might add another scuttle to the collection at some point :)

Welcome to B&B.
Large satin black scuttle ordered. Really come into its own when the cold weather hits
I got the Teak in medium and there is plenty of room in there for any size brush; my largest knot is 27mm. I use it daily all year round.

Don't use boiling water as it will kill the lather. Fill with hot tap water first to warm it up, then replace water in base after > 3 minutes for that warm lather through the shave.
