I want to try SE

I've been reading for a while now about SE razor and blades and decided that I want to try. My initial choice was the AC blade and The General razor. Luckily they've just released a new batch, but the price kept me away. Any chance that I will find an aluminium version for sale?
Next choice was the Schick injector. I settled on an L1 model based on reviews. I like mild razors. I ordered one from ebay, gave it a good scrub, a light polish and a Barbicide dip. It came without a loaded blade, but there was one in the magazine. I loaded that one, but I do not plan to use it. I found these vintage Schick platinum blades. Should I try the vintage blades or wait until I order some Chicks? Are Chicks available anywhere else besides US?
Any piece of advice is welcomed.
Thanks!

I never knew that! Why is that?
Apparently, without the 'bracing' of the existing blade, the new one can enter diagonally and rub the cutting edge along the blade supports resulting in a face-eating blunt blade. New razors would come with a blunt, blade substitute pre-loaded to prevent that from happening.

To be fair, I'm passing on 'conventional wisdom' here. I haven't experimented, but the geometry seems to make it likely.

Useful to know. Thank you.

You wanna try an SE, first of all you MUST be a real man and not a lazy bloody chicken.

Get yourself a Bowie knife and shave like a real SE.

Also remember that the first blade injected into an empty razor is likely to be damaged and be unusable. You need to use only the seconds and subsequent blades.
That is why I will not use the blade that came in the magazine with the razor. The edge rubbed against the first blade stop when I injected it.

Congratulations. Nice razor.
The vintage blades should be perfectly OK. Go for it.
Ordering Chicks from the US (Amazon) is the cheapest way to get hold of them. (I'd be happy to be wrong though)

Thanks!
There is a small crack on the handle, right where the metal head is attached. I hope it will not develop over time.
I have tried the DE version of the Schick platinum and wasn't impressed. If I don't like the shave I won't hold it against the razor.

Had my first shave this morning with the Schick L1 and a vintage Schick Platinum blade.
It went ok-ish: the razor feels mild, there is some blade feel, but acceptable (YMMV of course). It is very light and for that reason I tend to add a bit of pressure. I am still searching for the perfect angle - it will probably come with use. The lather had a tendency to run off the razor head - maybe it was too runny. It wasn't a great shave, it had no WOW factor, but I will certainly try again. I think the blade magazine got squished qt some point, because I had trouble getting the blade out. I had to pry open the top lips of the magazine and then it injected just fine. By the time I finished with the magazine, my lather was rather dry and even if I refreshed it, the glide wasn't that good on the first pass. It was either the lather, or the blade was not sharp enough - I do like sharp blades. Four or five minor weepers, so there must be room for improvement!
