3one6 user experience

Hello, I also posted this on Badger and Blade also:

I had my first shave with the all steel knurled Edwin Jagger 3ONE6 razor and it was a very good experience. No pixie dust and unicorn tears, but very good.

Like anything new some aspects will take some getting used to. My initial thought was that the handle was a bit thinner than I care for, but it isn't severe and I can see myself getting used to it easily.

The shave was very efficient and slightly more aggressive than my standard Edwin Jagger DE89. I got a couple of weepers with a Feather blade where I normally get none, maybe I will try a Gillette Yellow blade tomorrow.

More information forthcoming as I acquire more experience.

If you get a chance, could you let us know what the diameter off the handle is? I'd like to order a bullet razor stand for it. No one in England has received a dispatch notification yet, and the EJ website is saying all of the SS razors are OUT OF STOCK.

Per the EJ website the handle diameter is 11.85 mm. My hand held measuring confirms this number. I called it 12 mm which is plenty close to 11.85.

Aluminum or Stainless handle? Where did you take the measurement? I measured mine (aluminum, red) with a digital calipers and it was closer to 11 mm mid-handle--the little bottom cap at the base of the handle is slightly wider that's closer to 12 on my calipers.

BTW I posted a review yesterday with specs, pics, and impressions.

Mantic59,

This razor was the all steel version and I measured across the base cap with a stick ruler. I don't doubt that it may be closer to 11 mm as you measured mid handle.

I will look for your review. I appreciate the heads up as your reviews are pretty well balanced.

Day 2: Today I got two weepers and one bleeding nick on my first pass. I was not happy. This was using a Feather blade on its second shave. Normally I get very good, trouble free shaves with my DE89 so I am somewhat concerned with this 3one6. After the first pass I switched to a Gillette Yellow and finished the shave, but my confidence had already been shaken for this morning's shave. I hope and pray that tomorrow will be a better experience.

I am not knocking Edwin Jagger products, you'd have a fight on your hands if you tried to take my barley handle DE89, but this 3one6 may just be too aggressive for me. A fine razor, but maybe just not suitable for me.

I won't give up on the 3one6 after only two shaves, but it better connect pretty quickly. The DE89 and I hit it off right away and I was hoping for the same here.

I really don't want to sound discouraging because this razor may just be the best thing since sliced bread for many; I am just trying to report my initial user experiences.

I really want to like this razor so will give it some more time.

Peace from across the pond.

Maybe try the razor with a blade with a bit less bite than a Feather or 7OC Yellow? IMO, they are two of the sharpest blades around for a razor that's supposed to be a bit more aggressive than a DE89 I'd recommend going for a blade that's on the smoother side of things, eg Gillette Platinum.

Donnie,

Thanks for the suggestion on the blades, I will look around and see what I have in my stash of blades. Seems like I've got a Platinum or two laying about somewhere.

Sounds about correct. British company (presumably) and available everywhere except Britain.
It sounds like a large number were manufactured and shipped internationally and those of us in the UK are getting them made as we order. I ordered mine on Monday and I've been told it will be manufactured and dispatched by Friday at the latest. They've probably put the 'out of stock' notifications up to prevent people waiting for weeks after placing an order. I quite like having it manufactured for me. Makes it quite personal in a way. Ignore the fact it's one of many if the same razor in the workshop!

Assuming the demand is met and all razors are dispatched before the weekend, I would imagine they'll be back on sale by Monday.

Alternatively they're trying the Apple method of limiting availability to build fever and demand!

Day 3: I am struggling with how to relate my 3one6 razor experience without sounding overly negative, but it just isn't going well for me. I changed two things today: 1. I changed out the handle to my EJ barley handle. This gave me more confidence and control over the 3one6 head. I really do find the 30ne6 handle too narrow. 2. I used a different blade; a a red Israeli.

I am a competent enough shaver that I generally don't nick myself or even get a weeper unless I am careless. So when I shave and draw blood my response is usually, "Hmm, that doesn't happen very often. Don't take the blade for granted." However, when I draw blood three days in a row there is something more going on here. Yes, I nicked myself again this morning.

Overall the shaves have been good, discounting nicks of course, but the razor is definitely a bit more aggressive than the DE89. I can feel "heat" in a few areas where I normally didn't feel anything before, but the razor is more aggressive by design so I can't fault it for that.

I may go electric for a day or two to let my face recover. We shall see.

Peace from America's heartland. :)

Blades won't change the blade gap nor anything else physically for that matter. Sounds like it's too aggressive for you and that is no sin. Shaving should be a pleasurable experience and not akin to ordnance disposal. Sell it and go back to the DE89.

I tried mine last night with a NOS Personna Super Platinum Chrome on one days growth.

Excellent 3 pass shave using Semogue soap. I would compare this to my .84 Gamechanger or 6S on plate 5. It's definitely not a mild razor but I had no weepers but quite a lot of alum block feedback.

I shave almost every day and I think this may be a little aggressive as a daily driver but I'll try it again this evening.

Quality is superb for the price point and it's already a keeper for me.

I totally agree that it is very good quality for the price. I'll try my first shave with a Polsilver SI and MdC. I'll be aware of the first impression that it's more aggressive than EJ's contention that it offers 'minimal blade feel'.

Update: I used Panna Crema because that always gives me the best cushion and glide. The shave was exceptionally close. It will never replace the Pils, or Feather ASD2 as my go-to daily shavers, but it is a keeper. I had to use a post shave balm to calm my skin, but no cuts, weepers, or hot spots. I think EJ fudged their claim of 'minimal blade feel', as I was conscious of every stroke on a 2-pass WTG shave. If I hadn't gotten used to the minimalistic handle of the Pils I would have had trouble maintaining a grip, but the knurled handle came into its own. All-in-all, I give it an 8 out of 10.
