Michells Wool Fat Soap - Vegetarian???

Hi Guys,

I'm sorry to start this in a separate thread but there seems to be so much confusion about Mitchells Wool Fat Soap.

I'm not a vegan but am veggie for my sins, and contacted Mitchells to find out if their soap is suitable for veggies.

Sadly it isn't.

Lanolin makes up a tiny part of the soap and the biggest ingredient is beef tallow.

The email from Michells is below.

Thanks
Steve

Dear Mr Scorer,

Thank you for your enquiry.
I can't recall being asked this question before, but you assume correctly. The Lanolin comes from the fleece of the sheep and the Sodium Tallowate is derived from beef tallow.

I trust this answers your query.

Yours sincerely,

Graham Robinson

Well I for one wasn't sure. There used to be something in the literature that said something about no animals being harmed during the making of the soap, but I can't find any evidence of that now.

Thanks for clarifying!

The animals were harmed for the meat. no one wants to eat tallow, so make soap with it

That can actually be quite a misleading statement. I believe many companies use ingredients which have been tested in the past.....have a proven track record and require no further testing. They can in that case say no animals are harmed during the manufacture of the finished product. Once the work has been done there is no need to 'reinvent the wheel'

Are there any soaps which do not contain dead animals, and are they worth using over a cream?

Genuinely interested - I am vegetarian and been wondering this. The thought of smothering dead animal bits on my face is just wrong, though of course being a hypocrite I wear leather shoes.

Hi, Saponificio varesino are superb soaps.None better imo. Some contain bees wax I believe and someone who was a vegan objected to this.

There are a number of recommendations for vegan soaps in the thread below (and a lot of going off topic as well)

One of my favourite soaps be it vegan or otherwise is 3P and if you are looking for samples of vegan soaps Shave Dash has a good selection.

Going O/T? On The Shaving Room? With our reputation?

Wickham 1912 are all free from any animal ingredients, and vegan friendly.
(I have some for sale in BST)

I recently finished an artisan soap made in Poland, which was truly excellent (I'm not an expert in artisan soaps, but this one was certainly the best I've ever used). It might likely qualify as a "vegetarian" soap.

Well, they certainly have the export market in mind, hence the English wording.
