The country where I grew up didn't have television. When I arrived in London I immediately switched on the telie in my hotel room and being mesmerised by the Ken Dodd show.A time before day time TV!

It was generally used for bills/receipts, to indicate the cost of a single item, where several have been supplied. e.g.
4 lightbulbs @ 56p......£2.24
It literally meant 'at a cost of'.

Actually no, not on a real typewriter keyboard. We did have the § and ƒ Keys though.
