Mitchell’s Wool Fat

What was the issue ?
Or what didn’t you like ?
It was actually the Freshwood i would have tried
Great aftershave with a superb ‘old timey’ wood n’ spice scent. Kinda like Grandad’s BO but in a good way. The scent dissipates very quickly so perhaps that was the main issue? Vintage Old Spice aftershave lasts on me almost like an EdP which the former Mrs Fraser wasn’t keen on. Must get more!

Well, despite having the woolfat over 72h submerged in Freshwood, I can still smell the woolfat in the soap.

I bought a Fine American blend on BST recently that doesn't smell at all like American Blend, just the base smell..... I'm going to try loading up the brush before a quick dip in American Blend cream which fortunately I have some... if that works maybe I have some use for the woolfat after all.

Hey gents,

I just purchased 3 new pucks direct from Mitchells and its the same issue i had a few years back, cant get it to stay as a lather.

It seems its a bit hit and miss with their QC, when it works its truly amazing but get a bad one and its terrible.

They will no doubt blame it on too much water being used but its something else im sure..

Anyone else having issues with a newly bought puck?

In an attempt to fix the problem i removed the pucks from their boxes and binned them :(

Trying to air dry them a bit to see if that helps
It's got to be worth a try!
Good luck. :)
I've never had any problems in getting a good lather from MWF but I've always soaked my pucks until they have swelled up to fit the ceramic MWF pot.
It could be a bad batch, I will be interested to hear how you get on.

Paul.

Am new to all this, but I also was not yet successful in lathering up my MWF properly - though I do not have any problem lathering up any of my other (basic) soaps (Tabac, Arko, Proraso). I regularly get a thinnish "lather" which does not want to thicken, and collapses by the time it comes to the next pass.
I still need to try different brushes and some other tricks I read about, e.g. distilled water (the water around here is very hard). I bought my MWF just a few weeks ago.

I genuinely don’t think it’s your brush but out of curiosity what brush do you use.
Also what is your technique for lathering ?

MWF was my first tradtional soap and without any experience (and only a cheapo Chinese badger brush) I had no issues and never have.

Don't overthink it!

That said, I almost always flick the brush out almost entirely and dab in tiny amounts of water while I load up. For me, loading is literally 10 swirls in either direction and I'm good ... but I am well dialled in with the soap. Some folks advise a damn good loading, so 30 second of loading time while dabbing in drops of water as per advice for traditional triple milled hard soaps.

No tricks, no voodoo, no praying to arcane sheep gods!

Don't have too much water to start with and give it a good, long loading time. Then build your lather, again adding in drops of water and err on the dry side. Face lathering is near perfect as the residual water on the face from a pre-wash is generally sufficient to hydrate the soap on the loaded brush while building the lather.

Myth-busting, I took the hardest water I could find to compare to my local soft water (and I live a mere hop, skip and a jump away from Mitchell's HQ) and found ... hard water was better! It controlled the suds that come from too much initial water so much better. Have a read: https://www.theshavingroom.co.uk/co...wool-fat-water-sensitive-answer-inside.35452/

Just load up (well) and build the lather adding tiny amounts of water slowly.

I've only got some cheap stuff: an Omega boar brush, and a synthetic Nom (this one is does feel very good, but still does work for the other soaps). So far I've tried just soaking a brush and then straight to the puck, and also tried blooming the soap in warm water for a few minutes and then wet brush. Pretty much the same result every time. The one time it seemed to improve somewhat is when I took the thin 'lather' to the face and continued face lathering for several minutes, but I still could not get it to the consistency I get from all the other soaps.
