Acquisitions - January 2022

I'm down to my last stick, so this arrival today was very welcome.

I made a deal on Ebay for 5 new Gillette Guard razors and 24 razor heads. I use a Guard now & again for touch ups around the chin/mouth area and under the nose. I paid approx. $15 U.S. for the lot. I have also found that women fall head over heels for a Guard for shaving whatever areas they desire. Of course, it's merely an "ice breaker" for a suave & sophisticated stud such as myself. ;)

I honestly NEVER thought I'd get a D Injector as when they show up on the Bay they go north of $200. Imagine how quick I clicked the Buy It Now when I saw the listing pop up with a $40 BIN. EXCELLENT condition. I know it's just another Injector but, I'm Stoked to have A thru G now and an M !!

I have just taken delivery of a Miniog Welsh slate and a x60 loupe for honing (or at least, trying to). The excellent John June of JJ Shaves supplied said stone, along with tips of how to use it correctly, and best of all, he honed my Stiz on it (which arrived from ebay with some pretty nasty hone wear and unshaveable) to show me what the stone and the razor are capable of in the right hands, so I have a baseline for what the edge should look like under the loupe and how it should feel. Now "all I have to do is simply" replicate that (oh gawd!)

With good stropping, you'll not need a refresh for a while ... taut strop, no slop. Do some reading, but I found Welsh slate (or maybe my technique, although my Chinese stones did not seem to like it) seemed to like oil rather than water for finishing. Squirt of WD-40.

Cheers Paul. As you say, the Stiz isn't going to need any honing for a while, I've a paddle strop and a hanging strop with linen, both from William Graham, which should keep it good for a while. I'm dead keen to try the Stiz but first I want to inspect the edge visually under the x60 loupe and compare it with my others that I've been maintaining on balsa and diamond with leather stropping after. Then compare the shave, and try to memorise how a good edge looks and feels. Cheers for the tip Re WD40 vs water. I'm slightly unsure whether that's a reversible decision, or once oiled no going back? Will certainly bear it in mind and if it can't hurt I'll try it. Now I need to decide which of my straights is gonna be first up.

Loupe, Miniog and matching nagura, #1000 diamond for lapping or even bevel setting.

A bit of eBay has netted me another Schick and a British made Ever Ready. Seeing them, both superb condition. Got to look into the Schick to be sure of model, etc. Definitely different to the Canadian E5 that I've got. The Ever Ready is Chrome, and made in UK, so slightly different to my other one.

Wanted a shave soap to go with Brut. So picked this also a few bath soaps. Have been using Stirling soaps for a few months and the bars have great scents and last reasonably well.
