Straight Razor Shave of the Day

Razor P Hospital Le Grelot Thiers
Another excellent shave with this razor stropped on pasted balsa. Keen yet very smooth and comfortable. 3passes for a dfs+ finish. I only realized this razor doesn't sound like a hollow grind at all. In fact almost silent like a heavier grind.

The steel in these old French razor is as hard as their Swedish counterparts. Also many of the Le Grelot grinds on the vintage ones are 1/2. Those might be good reasons why it doesn’t “sing”. I have also noted that a razor sings better if I hone it on a coticule rather than a keener edge with a finer stone. I have used the same razor and this is my experiences I might be totally off my rocker here, but might be worth considering. They are all superb shavers.

Hey, thanks for your response. A 1/2 grind...no wonder. Something new to learn for me. I don't have any stones except just rely on a shave-ready edge and maintain it with the 3 pasted balsa. I was thinking about getting an affordable finisher but undecided because most are out of my affordability range...except the Naniwa Super Stone 12k (recommended in your opinion??)

Many people like that stone. Unfortunatrly I can’t make a recommendation on a synthetic, as the only one I have is a bevel setter. The rest are all naturals.
Coticules are fairly inexpensive for one stone honing. They can be great finishers too. I use glycerine/water on mine and the edges are near mirror polish and they are much keener compared to using just water for me.

Thanks for your reply and tips. I will wait patiently for an affordable natural hone...most probably a loooooong wait.
