What are you eating tonight?

Nothing like a simple meal:- Fillet of undyed Smoked Haddock oven baked in foil slathered in butter with bead and butter

Good to see proper cutlery - that is a proper fish knife and fork, right?

We went away for a few days the other week and I spotted that they did kippers for breakfast ... so naturally, yes, that was me stinking the dining room out at eight in the morning :ROFLMAO:

We just went to the Toby Carvery*, lol! Not exactly home cooked but I'm not going to do a roast for 2, she loves a Sunday roast.

We were sat next to a somewhat senior gentleman, who came back with the king-size "upgrade for £2 more" plate, piled high. I thought to myself he is never going to eat that lot, not in a month of Sundays. Blow me, tortoise and hare, he apologised to his companions for taking so long, but gradually munched the whole lot, all bar one of his 2 yorkies. I was already thinking "chapeau" and then he said "where's the dessert menu?" I'm a bit of a trencherman myself, but there's no way I could've demolished what he packed away. Hut ab!

*Other carveries are available. Or at least, they were in the 70s/80s!

Yeah he probably won't eat again till Tuesday though. :)

Tonight, we had a kinda Hotpot. I had some chicken breasts out to defrost, but then realised I had a glut of mushrooms and a courgette to use up. So, cooked them up with an onion in a pan, cooked the chicken in the oven, spotted some chorizo so gently cooked that off on the hob. Into an ovenproof dish went the chicken, topped with the mushroom, courgette and chorizo, splash of cream and then topped with sliced potato I hurredly boiled while putting everything into the dish. Bouillon poured over and loadsa butter on the potatoes, into the oven at 220 for half an hour to cook on and crisp up the potatoes. It was really good!

Nowt wrong with a Toby Carvery. I like the Cola machine and the really synthetic ice cream.

Did you suss the regionality of the chap next to you? Bet he was an old Yorkshire boy ;)

I tend to find that unplanned meals turn out the best, as in have a look in the fridge, see what you've got and make shit up. Turns out great rather than plan a great meal that turns out average at best. In not a chef I'm a cook. (y) :)

Wow for an impromptu use-em-up that sounds superb! Well apart from the courgette. They're my "bêet noire" (deliberately misspelt) and IMO best used for hitting people over the head in a comedy vegetable cosh kind of way. I think this goes back to being force fed ratatouille as a young child, so I won't judge! The rest sounds like it was delicious.

Yeah that old boy, I don't think he was from Yorkshire or surely he'd not have left a Yorkshire pud behind? Or maybe down here they're not up to snuff, so you could be right!!

Soulmate! I have a saying (which I've likely picked up from someone more widely read) that great Chefs do indeed make great creations whereas great Cooks make great meals from the leftovers. I'm a cook, too. Mrs will often say how she'd enjoyed a meal and could I do it again ... to be disappointed by the explanantion that it was a one off as the two or three bowls of leftovers in the fridge were unlikely to ever align themselves ever again.

Why not a Roast for Two, leftovers can be frozen and used for hotpots, stews, curries etc.

Im drooling over that , a man after my own heart .
Not quite a Steak Pie, but Supper tonight was M&S Quiche Lorraine. There is a Steak Slice and Beef and Onion Pie, both from Clayton Park Bakery who made my earlier Steak Pie and Beef Pasty, in the fridge.

I’ve seen Clayton Park products in the shops in the Durham area .
I am fortunate to live in a village where we have a butchers that makes the best cold fill pork pies ever and the steak pies have a succulent gravy with generous chunks of steak in them .
The sister runs the bakery side and the brother runs the butchers.
She makes mean cakes too .
