Gillette (Shanghai) Blades Now Available In The UK

The purported Gillette "insider" at B&B years ago once wrote something that struck me as very genuine. Someone had remarked that all their DE blades were probably two or three at best & merely relabeled. The "insider" stated that that was not true and they varied blades via computer based upon buying habits for those particular geographic locations. That makes sense in today's World and P&G's money. Certain blades as we know are heavily marketed in specific areas with the Nacet in the Middle East as a good example. I have read as well that Asian beard hair, although sparser than most other races, is tougher.

I am sure he meant changing hone angles, edge hardness and probably coatings..........but that's all just conjecture/theory on my part. I am 100% sure Mopar Mark could answer this question in a New York minute, but I see he hasn't posted in a spell.

First shave with the Blue blade was excellent very smooth and no irritation. I'll use it again tonight for a face shave, thats when I can tell how much I like a blade compared to my head shaves. I'm hopefully it'll be a good shave and money well spent on these blades.

I am very curious for your feedback on the Vietnam version of the Super Thin.

Mr. culcreuch, it is no wonder you're having rough shaves it you're stropping modern DE blades as that is accelerating the normal erosion of the PTFE coating which imparts the smoothness. Don't do that. :)

I find for a blade that has a bit too much bite/a little rough to begin with to it to give it a shave in the mildest razor head I own (either a bakelite Souplex or an Old Type) before moving the blade onto my Techs. I find that works really well for some of my favourite blades, eg Permasharp/7 Black, but generally if a blade isn't a good shaver in my Fat Handle Tech I'm unlikely to respond to the blade in any razor.

Todays stropping was an act of desperation. I have never stropped anything other than a traditional straight razor..

Ironically, I was thinking about our shaving comrade in arms pjgh and his comments on the SGBB during my shave today. I also had a smooth as glass shave using a post-war English "ball end" Tech with P&B Spitfire soap and the 2nd shave in on an Astra SP blade. As my prep is almost exactly the same it's a question of soap and/or blade. Was it because the 2nd shave is what many term the best or due to the P&B soap? I am going to give the nudge to the soap as I have always gotten absolute storybook shaves with P&B soap. There is a symbiotic relationship at work here for sure, but a great soap sure helps "pave" the road for a great blade to really shine.

Just as a test, tomorrow I shall try to use the P&B Spitfire soap and the same razor using the London Bridge blade on deck for its 2nd shave.

My caveat was that I've been using a Muhle Rocca, which can tame literally anything. That said, I'm not numb to the sense of the blade. Interesting comment regarding the soap. I'm about to do my third shave with the Super Blue. My first was with my mate's sister's homemade soap (which is rather good, I must say), second with the reformulated LEA shaving stick and tonight with the Vie-Long shaving stick (which is the same as the old tallow LEA shaving stick).

Soap makes a difference and the razor makes a difference, but I rather fancy that the gear were using is all rather fine stuff. It's not like we're squirting on a dash of canned goo and dropping our finest blades into a Yuma. At the top end of everything we're literally splitting hairs in that final percent of performance and we do make dramatic distinctions.

That said, when I get an outstanding shave ... I know I've had an outstanding shave. When that becomes absolutely repeatable with varied equipment and across a number of blades, I can then remove the provisional rating from a blade (for me, that's usually after finishing a tuck). But for now, my 10/10 is a provisional 10/10 but still a 10/10 nevertheless.

cant lie ive been reading this thread from the start, i was so tempted to pull the trigger and get some especially those london bridge blades as i bread about them over on B&B and theyve been spoken highly of, just got so many blades though lol

which one would you say are the best out these three gillettes from your lots experience?

Yes, but even when we change one variable from a known factor of a 10/10 shave it can shake things up. Truth be told, I wax & wane between the soap or the blade being the most important factor when all other factors are objective. BUT, one thing is at least for me sure, that when I do my normal thorough prep and use a great soap then whichever Gillette blade I load into my Tech performs superbly. Of course, a rational & sane man would simply stick with one razor, blade & soap.

There are no shortcuts home. You need to decide for yourself after trying them.
