name me some good gillette razors, bit confused

just got the gillette tech through the post, omg whats shocked me the most is the size it looks small (the handle),
think it must be the smallest razor out the ones i got, not that i got many lol!

anyways it looks in excellent condition and the stand is nice too, very happy with the price i paid

Here's a pics but I'm rubbish at taking pics lol

p.s also just got the edwin jagger kevin (with de89 head) through the post with the astra green blades, will post pictures when i get a chance :)

Give it a wash in hot soapy water with tooth brush and if you have a dish washer run it through hot wash that will sterilise it and then you'll be surprised how well it shaves . I like short handle razors although at first it took me couple of shaves to get used to them

yea the size really threw me tbh, looks like a toy lol

so i just used the gillette tech with a astra green sp blade, wowwwwww what a shave!

honestly really enjoyed it, the handle has a very good grip even when it was drenched in lather/water etc is just felt tight in my hand and i felt confident it wouldnt slip out my hand tbh

so i thought i used the gillette hd500 rocket with a astra green sp blade so i thought i'd use the gillette tech with an astra green sp de blade too,

you know to see how it compares, iny my eyes imo and experience of just using it i found that the gillette tech to be much better and more efficient then the rocket hd500, when i say much better it didnt feel as mild it just took everything off,

when i used the rocket hd500 with the astra green sp i felt i could get abit rougher and use more pressure,

but with the tech and the astra green sp i just let it glide along and do its thing, thoroughly enjoyed it tbh

bare in mind im a head shaver but i do think the hd500 rocket maybe suited better to a sharper blade and the tech will work well with more razors imo anyways thought i'd put that out there and what to hear what your thoughts are peeps :)

Good, good! You're on a roll now ...

Great that you like the Tech. The late ones like you have are indeed light, but still very efficient - remember, that model is the last of a long line of Techs developed over decades and decades. Sure, some folks will say the early ones are better, others the middle ones, others the brass ones and other the flat bottom, etc. You get the picture. Techs are damn good razors.

Great also that you have a Rocket HD500. Of all of the "twist to open" models, this is the one I kept. I think it's a great example of a heavy razor and a shining example of Gillette's butterfly razors. I think you're right about sharpness as the heavier models perhaps suit sharper blades more as you have to compensate for the heaviness by giving it a lighter touch. That gives a very good shave with a sharp blade. In a light razor, yes, perhaps you're inclined to press more which can lead to irritation, rough spots and even weepers/cuts.

Save the Tech for good quality stainless steel blades and perhaps the HD500 for platinums and chromes?

Now you have three good baselines: the Gillette green, which is a great example of a good, middle tier stainless blade; the Tech, which is a great example of a daily shaver; the HD500 which is a great example of a heavier razor.

You can use this experience to build new experiences around ...

What else is out there? Well, there are earlier/heavier Gillette Tech razors - my preference is for the British "flat bottom" which I like because it is the same shape/geometry as the 'New' model with an open comb. Those two would make a great addition to your collection and give you two new experiences. For blades, maybe start to build around the Gillette brand? There's the yellow pack, which is platinum ... so one for the HD500? You'll find Silver Blues (GSBs) are well spoken of and the Super Platinums also. Gillette have a number of factories around the world, but most are made either in Russia or India, and folks do seem to find a difference between them. One to consider is the PermaSharp Super, which is a Gillette blade made in Russia for the Turkish market - it's top tier, seethingly sharp and also sold in single edge format for shavettes, popular with "Turkish" barbers.

Indeed! You're on a roll now ...

yea sounds a like a plan

its amazing how different a de blade performs from razor to razor, i mean i wasnt that impressed with the astran green sp in the hd500 rocket buy boy in the tech it was amazing tbh, smooth and sharp too

got a 1964 ball-end Tech, a 1954 SuperSpeed, and a Black Beauty (long handle) on its way over to me from a generous member on a different forum

cant wait to try the black beauty in particular

i mean from all the vintage gillette razors i love the look of the black beauty the most and also its the long handle one so should be good for head shaving hopefully

well i just got a sample pack of 130 de blades today so will try out the gillette ones,
cant tell which one is the gillette rubies, should be there somewhere though hopefully

That's a fine selection! I know you want to try them all right now, but before you do ... breathe! Ahhh ... and now when you do try them, look first at whether they're stainless, chrome or platinum and take a note of where they're made. Some of those are carbon steel as well (largely the Treet) and these will give a completely different shave, often improving as they go.

See the Tiger (centre/bottom)? Chuck that one in the bin!

I'd say start with what you know: Gillette. Try another Gillette, take note, then another, take note ... and when you try something different, compare back to the most similar Gillette you just tried.

Your Gillette Rubies will come in a blank sleeve, but they will say Gillette Rubie on them:

Notice the distinct similarity in packaging to the Rapira Platinum Lux? That could be one of your first comparisons to make ...

Have a lot of fun!

Generally, I'd say no ...

That said, I really do like PermaSharp Super and have bit of a soft spot for Sputnik and VOSKHOD. That is about it for Gillette, for me. I really like Treet and enjoy a lot from Lord (including Shark). Blades are a very personal thing and just a quick look at the "best and worst" thread, you'll see some post their top 5 best and worst to see the very next person listing many of those blades in quite the reverse order.

When trying these out, not only consider sharpness and smoothness (does it do the job?) but also how comfortable it felt (some folks just don't like to feel the blade, others do ... it's not tuggy, but some enjoy a good rasping), what the regrowth is like (this tells you how uniform and close the shave really was) and finally whether the blade has a specific character that you can identify.

You'll find your favourites ...

... and you'll know immediately blades that you don't like. But, give it another year or two and go back to those, and you'll find a whole new stack of friends.

anyone prefer the gillette tech over the hd500 rocket?

honestly i can understand now why a lot of people mentioned to me to get the gillette tech,
for th eprice point and the efficiency it has to be up there, what a razor! :)

So I got this delivered through the post just needs a good clean and polish, I got it thinking it was a gillette slim but I'm not sure can anyone help me identify it?

Okay so it's a gillette adjustable, it says this on it...

I have seven different Techs and an HD500. I will always keep the HD in my collection because it's built like a tank and shaves very smoothly, but I can get a closer shave from all of my Techs. They are very mild, efficient shavers but require good technique to achieve bbs. I would respectfully suggest that you don't make too many changes in the early days - learn a razor before you move onto the next, because they will all shave slightly differently.
