SOTD: Saturday 20th April - Friday 26 th

Fri 26th April

RazoRock Syn. 24mm
P & B Pall Mall
Schick Type F
Schick S/S - Chick [ 1 ]
Floid Vigoroso A/S Lotion

The Type F that I used today is considered to be quite mild, but I find it to be very smooth yet effective in removing my relatively harsh stubble. Today with a fresh blade the Shave was ultra smooth and yet within normal Shave time I got a super close all round finish. Of the Schicks that I own the F is probably the nicest to hold and Shave with, as it is so manoeuvrable.

Thanks Tony. I actually quite like the Macca Root scent myself. I find it a solid performer - especially if I've had a rough shave previously.

It was an old pot resurrected when I restarted Wet shaving. It's used up now as a potted SL with cut down Palmolive sticks. It was always a good performer though. I got it when I was straight razor shaving a while back..

Soap - Vitos Red
Brush - Yaqi Fan Tuxedo
Razor - Lord L6
Blade - Lord Classic SS
Post - Witch Hazel
Balm - Nivea Cooling
AS - Brut Oceans

I've owned and used the Yaqi Fan Tux for a while now (maybe a year or so?) and until now I'd always either used the brush with a shaving stick or with a cream, I'd never used it load from a tub as I mistakenly thought the brush would be too floppy but it worked a treat.

A really great shave today, superb lather and the match of blade and razor was a great one.

Moss Anniversary Slate scuttle
Rooney 1/2 Faux Horn Finest (24/50)
Penhaligon's English Fern shaving soap (tallow)
Wolfman WR1-SB Antique Bronze/Darwin
Gillette Platinum Plus (1)
Penhaligon's English Fern aftershave (vintage)
Trumper Eau de Quinine (vintage)

The old Penhaligon's soap made wonderful fragrant, thick lather, which balanced well the slight harshness of the new blade.

The OneBlade Genesis arrived today. After the razor getting a good clean and soak I pressed on with the shave. As it was the Executive Shaving Company that was my first experience with wet shaving, and them being the only UK supplier of this razor, I thought I'd mainly use their products this evening - brush and cream.

Ok, first things first. The packaging for this razor is excellent. The leather box and red stitching lets you know that quality is inside. Likewise, the interior packaging is precision made. The razor and stand are snuggly and securely held in place with quality cut padding. This is great, but I couldn't help thinking yeah cool....but does it make it shave any better?

Examining the razor itself it is well engineered. It looks good, feels good and the stand only supports its impressive appearance. Loading the blade is a piece of piss. I know lots of users feel cheated as there is only one blade that fits this razor, though some are managing to doctor other blades to fit. All I'll say is the Feather blade clicked securely into place with little effort.

Now onto the shave. This was a tried and tested road I followed with my usual pre-shave and a good lathering of ES Natural cream. Using the razor on my 1st WTG pass took me straight back to cartridge shaving but without any sign of irritation. More pressure than usual is required to allow the pivoting head to move, but all thoughts of blade angle were gone. Yes I found a little spot that gave me a weeper during the first pass, but that was gone by the time I reached my 3rd ATG pass.

Washing up after my final pass the finish was phenomenal. The biggest difference was around my neck. Soft and smoother than glass. I have only achieve this level of smoothness after a near perfect shave when using SE or DE razors.

Splashing on the Xtro aftershave there was a very slight burn, more fresh than uncomfortable.

My first experience with this razor is really positive. The finish is fantastic.

There a downside however. There is no skill needed whatsoever with this razor....and I mean none. If this was your introduction to the world of wet shaving you'd think it was the easiest and most straightforward shave ever. I enjoy the experience of shaving, the challenge, the learning, the variation between razors and blades, but this razor can be used straight out the box with good results. I'm not convinced this is the direction I want to go but by God the result for next to no effort is good. It something I'll ponder over during the next few weeks as I continue with the Genesis.

The final thing, and elephant in the room is the cost. Just over £300 brand new. Is it worth it? No, not in my opinion. The lifetime warranty tells you the manufacturer knows the razor is a winner, but the price tag and limitation to one overpriced blade is, again in my opinion, limiting what could covert lots of cartridge users.

I'll continue with this razor and keep you updated.

Have a great night and weekend folks! [emoji1303]

Brush - Omega Boar
Pre - Wilko shave oil
Razor - 1950 (or 48/49?) Gillette Superspeed
Blade - GSB (3)
Soap - Boots shaving cream and Palmolive superlather
ASB and AS - Boots Freshwood
Bowl - Giles Shaving Co.

Today's shave lives at the other end of the expense spectrum that @GordyC has shaved at today. Whilst buying glycerine for my superlather (thank you @Palmolive fox and @Tony'schin), I decided to pick up a few of the cheap Boots products along with some Wilko shave oil to try. This superlather was easily my most comfortable lather to date. Glide and protection was fine on passes 1 and 2 but I realised it could have used more water when I added more water for the third pass and the lather improved further.

The Freshwood ASB is nice but I'm not sure on the AS. It's not a base scent, just slightly industrial. Can't really complain for under £3 though!

Overall, a comfortable and cheap shave with a decent finish.

Hope you all have a great weekend!

+1 on the boots freshwood asb, I like the asl too, but the balm is the better of the duo... I'll be using them tomorrow in my SOTD set up.

Friday 26th April SOTD

YaqI Chianti 24mm Synthetic
Palmolive Classic Cream
Timeless 0.68 Scalloped
SuperMax Blue Diamond Titanium (2)
Pre De Provence No63 Balm

The Palmolive lather looked perfect - voluminous, glossy and thick, but performance wasn't great.
I picked up a couple of weepers, and some irritation and redness post shave.
Compared to my previous shave with Maca Root Cream which performed perfectly, Palmolive was almost the polar opposite.
Finished with Pre De Province Balm for it's restorative/healing post shave properties instead of my usual ASL splash or lotion.
