Advice on ingrowns

Recently I seem to be getting some closer shaves. This might not necessarily be better, as I also seem to be having a few ( what I would call severe) ingrowns. I wont go into specific details but some of these have been painful and unsightly!! Nuff said about that - you get the idea.

I generally go for 2-3 passes, WTG, XTG and ATG. I would have thought that the best way to avoid them is to cut out the ATG pass, and this is what I intend to do in future shaves.

Can anyone offer any other advice to minimise these little buggers
