Pogonotomists do it in a lather; straight-razor users get all stroppy, then do it in a lather.

Oh yes, of course. I wouldn't be the first to succumb to that temptation by a long chalk.

in order of preference:

1. Merkur 38C barber pole
2. Edwin Jagger DE89
3. Feather Portable
4. Gillette Tech

As a newbie I have to know, no I need to know - which are the 2 too many.

My list, in order of preference

Futur
Merkur 34G HD
Vision
Feather Portable
Gillette Slim
Gillette Superspeed Flare Tip (1960) [my birth razor]
Gillette Tech (aluminium)
Wilkinson Sword

If I'm in a hurry the Merkur 34G HD and the the feather Portable seem to give me the best combination of quick and close. At the minute I'm sticking almost exclusively to Feather blades
