ATG help

Hi all, I have a problem with shaving ATG but only under my chin.

I use a Dovo shavette for the last 4 or 5 months now and get on with it great but as soon as I try and shave ATG under my chin it feels like it is snagging and catching the skin, after a few seconds I have tiny spots of blood coming from all over the place, this even happens when I try a 3 pass shave.

Now if I use a cartridge razor I dont get any problem at all, what do you think I am doing wrong?

Before I try a ATG there I always do a WTG and then a XTG. I do my whole face and neck that way : 1 WTG; 2 XTG ; 3 ATG . Then I touch up .

I tried a shavette once, this was how I looked after. I've never tried since:

Hm I always go WTG then XTG but no matter what I do I just cant shave ATG, Do you think the angle is wrong?
I try and get the blade as low down to my face as I can.

Gently pull on the skin to the side of the area you're shaving; I pull gently on an area just above my jawline and below the corner of my mouth to put a slight bit of tension on the chin area.

It's probably technique. When I use a straight I struggle with under the chin, they are more forgiving than shavettes so my problem is getting the shave close enough more than getting nicks.

The angle should be very shallow going ATG to avoid tugging and the lather should be wetter than with a cartridge.

Have you had a go with a DE or SE? It should be easier to get the angle right.

Try not totally against the grain. If you imagine WTG being 12 o clock to six o clock, ATG three o clock to nine o clock, try four o clock to two o clock. I had the same issue with a bluebeards revenge shavette.
Or like the poster above says - practice with a DE - something like an Edwin Jagger to start with.

ive done atg all over, have i done it since? probably twice


its too much effort when 3 passes will get a very good shave.


the reason your cutting yourself is angle, if you dont have the angel right its very easy to cut yourself


you need roll the razor when you do an atg pass, tilt head all the way back as well.


ill try with my cjb straight tomorrow and probably end up in "cut of the day" over on straight razor place

You see many videos where the 1st instruction is to Map your Face. I believe it's a carry over from the old Barber Manuals that have diagrams of faces zoned off showing the average beard growth and what direction to shave it.
I never had the ambition to memorize them or map my face. As I mentioned before With my forehead being North and my ears East West; I do my whole face and neck North-South, then Middle -East, Middle-West; X the whole face and neck, and then South-North across the whole neck and face.

I do exactly that.
I know that the second pass on my neck is ATG in places, but I find this routine works well for me.

I found the chin tricky because the curvature changes so much. My approach was to shave it in a buffing like manner. Many short strokes only changing angles between each stroke. And I found that having some speed on the razor helped me. I only dug into the flesh when the razor stopped moving.

To keep the speed of the razor up and still be comfortable I applied this procedure:

First of all take a deep breath and realize that you have full control. You are going to succeed. Then in full attention shave each stroke with real intent, no pressure and even speed and angle.

Hope this helps you. Once you get it ATG can be very comfortable with a straight / shavette.
