Well, as we have our straights away for honing by Neil before we use them we had a very kind offer from Tazz of a loan of two razors so that we could shave with a sharp razor while waiting.

We jumped at the chance and two of Tazzs' babies were waiting to great me when I came home.

So, Kit went first with a good soaking of his beard, while I had a good soaking of all of me while waiting.

Kit used the gauntlet with Parazo pre shave cream, bluebeards revenge shaving cream, safety razors brush and old spice aftershave.

Kit did well, two passes and one nano nic (tip of razor at edge of nose), and a little irritation under an ear, but on the whole a satisfactory shave.

Fiona's shave came next, with C R Slater in sandlewood, the joy razor, same brush and bluebeards post shave balm. It went very well with no problem areas, I did almost all the work for a whole woman shave with Kit stepping in and doing the backs of my legs. It is impressively smooth on the legs and quite good in other areas.

I think we are both hooked now.

When I first started out he kindly piffed me a few packets of Greens to try out as my Yellow's were leaving me raw. I've tried several other blades since (as well as re-visiting hte yellows) and keep coming back to the Greens.

I bought these from this seller on ebay

No connection but £19.99 for 200 posted isn't bad at all. I didn't want the shavette or nick sticks and the seller kindly added in a few extra packets of blades instead. The service deserves a mention so if you're looking for a bumper box of blades, this chap is well worth a look.
From what I read, the brushes are of excellent value for money.

Ok, been at it for 6 weeks now and with the help of the chaps on here my technique, prep and post have really improved. Only thing is the dry sore face. Now before DE I have never used soap of any kind on my face in my life, only ever used shaving oil with the cartridge. Since starting DE I have used Crabtree & Eve Nomad, Trumpers Creams and Palmolive but same result from all. Post shave it's been Nivea Sensitive Balm. Reading around here and other sources Mitchells Woolfat seemed to get the thumbs-up for sensitivity as well as Proraso as a pre-shave. So on to Connaughts and they arrived today

Although I live in a hard water area the lather from the Mitchells was incredible and the zing from the Proraso was like having CPR on my face. The shave itself was a little better but the post shave feeling is incredible. My face feels hydrated and alive.

So Eureka for me as I was getting ready to throw the towel in but as everyone says on here it's about finding the combination that works for the individual.

Many thanks to all

I recently contacted Rod Neep and asked if he could make me a custom brush. The brief was a cone shaped brush from walnut with a copper collar and a copper band.
A few emails later and Rod thankfully took the job on, it was experimental ground he was treading with the copper band. The brush was to be a 26mm super silver tip.
I received the brush from Rod this morning and I can only describe it as a work of art, excellent craftsmanship from an artisan.
I set about whipping a couple of lathers to break it in and it was super soft on my first shave using it. I'm over the moon with it Rod, thank you.

I wish I could do it justice but I'm not into photography so my phone is my only camera, apologies. I appreciate it won't be to everyone's taste and it isn't a 'traditional' handle shape but I know what materials I like, what feels comfortable in my hand and generally what floats my boat.

Here's a link to a 'making of' on the Pens Of The Forest website.

I had a search but couldn't find much relating to this subject. So I'm getting very very interested in the straight side of things, so much process...I love process, and routine and tradition, basically it looks right up my street.

So far it seems that the whipped dog sight unseen deal appears pretty good value to get me started, because I can't afford to jump in completely at the deep end, especially with a strop that will end up in bits.

So any of you experienced UK folks tried these out? I care little about the visual, just the edge.

Also is anyone here offering similar level deals? I know that some of you are big into the honing/restoration and I know of a local antique dealer where I can get a hold on some well priced straights, would that work out better?

How have your dealings with them been? I'm trying to give them some money but so far communicating with them is like banging my head against a brick wall.
I'm after this, but it seems like it's all a bit too much effort.
