I have a Rocket HD, the supposedly rarer one with the part aluminium handle and the rhodium plated TV Rocket.

The TV has better grip as the knurling is deeper and is much more shiny with it being rhodium plated. But the HD has the recessed groove in the handle, half an inch below the head that is perfect for the thumb to sit in while the bottom of the handle rests on the pinky finger. The TV is also slightly heavier, which I like. Both work perfectly and give a good shave but one has to go. I thought I had decided that the TV was the keeper, but now I am not so sure.

So come on all you Gillette aficionados, which one would you keep and why?

OK Where to start, below and slightly forward of my right ear I have a bump under the skin I suspect an old pimple or similar. The problem is that if I nick it it bleeds like a stuck pig. I never recall nicking it with cartridges but have caught it a couple of times last week. I am developing a nice light touch but it's not good on this one spot. Other than avoiding it all together not really and option, anyone have any sugestions? It's a serious weeper more like a streamer when nicked.

Any one got any clever thoughts on how to match aftershaves with shaving creams?
I've got a few that work really well together : like prof blighty's endymion soap goes well with his Red ginger. And his Spanish limes soap works with yellow ginger.
When scents match I find the smell lingers for longer, and so half my soap and aftershave collection is matched.

But any ideas what soap goes well with my other aftershaves, namely Clinique happy, Davidoff hot water, and issay miyake? I can't find anything that compliments these.

I guess it's a case of finding what the fragrance notes for the aftershave are, and trying to match from there?

Made my weekly visit to Walgreens pharmacy today and saw this Butter Fly in a Bottle. 12.99$US yes, a little pricey until you see what it is. It's a Drone Butter Fly. The battery is in the top of the jar and when you tap the lid it flys around the bottle. Some times landing on the bottom of the jar or landing and holding on to the sides! No strings or lines; just Radio Signals!
China 12.99$! Makes you wonder who has the best Drones?!

If anyone uses this, it's half price until 3rd June.

I guess it's no use normally (i.e. with soap) but I have used it for years when camping or light weight travelling. I can shave quite well with just this tiny bottle of oil and a cartridge razor, so it's great for backpacking where every gram makes me feet ache more.

When I pick some more up myself on Monday I'll have to give it a go with a DE, just to see if that works too...

I love the aesthetics/hardware of shaving gear so was thinking of adding a Muhle 41 grande for a closer and more aggressive shave ( I tend not to shave of a sunday so mondays passes are a bit more rough!)

any advice on the M41 , how about Ikon..(seem pricey but then again , well made)

Lucky in that I have a really well stocked shop only a few miles from me so at least can handle them prior to purchase
any thoughts folks? ps, tried straights but ended up sliced! prefer the relative safety of the DE

I know I am new to DE shaving but today I got my first lot of irritation in an unexpected place!

My cheeks are covered in red blotches now but strangely enough the really dodgy, sensitive skin on my neck is absolutely fine!? I do have very dry skin and I am prone to excema which is why I have wet shaved for the last 25 years but always with cartridges. However I am very used to using a brush, proper prep and after care and I have been irritation free so far using my new DE razors.

The only change today was I used my US Aristocrat instead of the Super Speed I started with. I noticed that this gave me a better shave than the SS but I have come out looking like Mr Blobby, but my neck which is uber sensitive is absolutely fine!?

Do you think this may be now that I am some way in I have been a bit aggressive of is the US Aristo a harsh shaving mistress?

I've been using Astra Platinum blades each time and a new blade each shave and all my usual products so no change there then? Ideas?

Morning all.

I have a bit of time to kill today, waiting around for SWMBO to finish work, so took a wander around a local pound stretcher. They were selling the RSC Shave2 Cream, both the 'Moisturising' and the 'Sensitive' skin care formula. I had a look at the ingredients, and the only difference I can see is the moisturising one contains Theobroma Cacoa (Cocoa) Seed Butter, and the sensitive doesn't.

Is this the only difference? Or do they perform exactly the same, and it's just marketing guff to make you feel as if there's a difference?

Also, on a side note, how is their post shave soothing balm?

Any information gratefully received!

Thanks

Frustration with Feathers

Last night was a frustrating shave.

I used a Feather blade for a second shave. The previous night I had a really exceptional shave, really smooth and no nonsense. Felt great but yet again the following days shave with the Feather has been frustrating.

I've now used the Feather blade in the Fatip, Feather Popular, EJ DE86 and a Muhle R41.

In each case the first shave has been that epiphany i hear so much about with Feathers - great shaves, close and super sharp but on each one the follwoing day has been a mess of nicks, grazes and irritation (although not that much to be fair - it's no Derby after all).

I noticed last night, as with the Fatip when I last used the Feather, that it's around the ATG pass that these things start to happen (my 3rd pass). Putting the balm on last night and it barely seems to have taken any stubble off on the ATG pass but there's a bit of irritation and few weepers.

It's very annoying but it seems with the Feather I'm one great shave and out.

I've used the Feather Popular a lot over the last month since buyng it and managed to get 3 good shaves from a variety of blades, including what some may regard as budget blade such as Supermax Stainless and Trig, so I would have thought the Feather blade was a perfect match for it but again, one great shave and one frustrating one.

Or am I missing something ?

Hi all,

I'm looking for a bit of advice. I'm thinking of buying a straight razor with ivory scales from the US. It is old enough to fall under the CITES exemptions but doesn't have any paperwork to prove it's age. The razor was initially built in the UK, and the scales have not been re-worked. HOwever, I'm struggling to find any good information on whether I need to apply for an import license for this or not, and how to go about doing that. I don't even know if it is elephant ivory or something not controlled. Does anyone have any experience of importing this kind of thing from outside the EU?

Any advice would be very gratefully received.

Cheers,

It's only my second DE handle so I will be comparing it to my first, a Parker 96r

Tested with: Shark Super Chrome blade, D.R Harris Arlington soap.

For my second it was a tough toss up between a Merkur 34c and a Muhle R89. In the end the Rose Gold handle was all that decided it. My hopes were high and nearly met but it is such a soft shave that I'm finding it hard to completely love it.

Price (from Executive Shaving):
Standard R89 is £25 and I paid an extra fiver for the privilege of the RG handle. Parker 96r is £20 so not much difference.

Build:
3 Piece that feels very solid. It is finished so well and looks the part. The handle appears smooth but grips well and the Rose Goldiness is beneath a seal it seems so it won't chip off (which I was concerned about before it arrived). It is very handle-heavy so I found it hard at first to resist putting extra pressure towards the head during shave. It is in a different league to the rattly, dishevelled appearance of the 96r. It has a shorter handle than the 96r, the limit of shortness for me for both feel and the fact it barely fits in my razor stand.

Ease of use?:
As it was my first 3-piece, I had to be careful not to slice my fingers during the initial excitement of 'installing' a blade. Not as quick and easy as a butterfly head but as a result, a much more snug, precise fit to the blade. It also has a very specific angle of action so requires a little more precision than the 96r, which I found I could be lazy with and still cut hairs.

Shave quality:
Cannot fault. It barely feels like I am shaving. It also produces very little noise when shaving, I think due to how solid the head construction is, holding the blade firm and snug. I performed a 3-pass, WTG, XTG & ATG and there was not one hint of any pain and almost no indication that I was even sliding the blade across my face. It is so soft with such little feedback that I had to check I wasn't just sliding the head along my face! I can't believe such different shaves are to be had with identical blades.

The 96r has a little looseness in the blade it feels, the head didn't quite perfectly align. It made a nice noise (if that makes sense) and I really knew I was shaving once I started the XTG pass due to the mild discomfort.

I now understand what people mean by the 'aggressiveness' of a razor and I now know that I definitely prefer an aggressive shave. As a result, my Muhle R89 will join the rotation rather than replace the Parker. For everyday ease of use I'll shave with the Muhle but when I feel like a nice, slow, pampered shave I'll definitely use the dark horse that is the Parker 96r. For the rough, unrefined feeling, for the feedback and probably most of all for the noise it makes when cutting my whiskers.

Muhle R89: 8/10
- Superb finish, solid construction but a very soft shave with no feedback spoils it a little for me. One for the people who dislike aggressive shaves. Perhaps a perfect one for beginners?

It appears that I am not the only one in my house intrigued by the paraphernalia that DE shaving brings.

The temptation of meddling with a new and exciting EJ Best Badger brush and EJ86 razor on the bathroom shelf was obviously too much for a little person to resist this week. Clumps of black and white hair on the edge of the sink, then some on the shelf roused suspicions of some external interest.

The clincher was half a badger's nape sticking out between the blade and razor head, with little attempt to cover up the evidence of an attempted badger brush shave.

On confronting the 12 year old chief suspect, innocence and denial was the name of the game, whilst at the same time looking as guilty as a puppy sitting next to a pile of poo.

Still, hasn't affected the lathering up process any, in fact I think it's improved it slightly!

Has anyone else had their shaving experience improved by some kind of external intervention or accidental occurrence?
