Why Have More Than One

Question is why have more than one, just getting into straight razors myself and I wonder why more than one?

If its because you want more then fair enough, if its because you can't stop looking at them and then buying more again fair enough but is there a real reason why you would have more than one.

I have seen seven day sets, one a day no doubt and really nice to look but I can only use one razor at a time and only have one face.

That said I am sorely tempted with another straight and I have only just ordered my first one so maybe I have just answered that question?

Unless you hone your own razor you may need more than one just so you have a razor to use while one is being honed.

I can't think of any other real reason you NEED more than one. How many you want is a different matter entirely.

You need to let the razor rest a full day so the blade can re-align itself.

Right, I'm off to put the kettle on and grab some Hob Nobs and then I'll watch how this thread pans out.

Any fool knows that razors become very lonely when kept on their own. Razors are pack grooming equipment. It's obvious!

The most logical reason of having 7 or more razors if stropped correctly and all used in your rotation you may not have to hone them for an entire year or more, on the other hand if you kept one or two then you most certainly will need to hone them.

Jamie.

For all the reasons above and variety is the spice of life.
I only have three straights but intend to add to the collection shortly :icon_razz:

I also have a dozen de razors and i have two that give me a wonderful balance between a clean, comfortable irritation free shave. Why use any others? Its fun and they all give a different experience, same with soaps, brushes afrershaves, balms etc.
I need to shave every day so why not make it as fun, interesting and as enjoyable as possible.
Turn a chore into something fun and enjoyable and it ceases to be a chore.

Also i think we like to try different types full hollow ,wedges and the like ,But i think its fair to say to some of us its nice to see a cabinet of pristeen razors all honed and ready to go (in my case the wife says its an addiction) maybe shes right i dont really care lol.

just have one straight is fine, but two is better ( just doubling the time before honing is required) but what if you get a 6/8 and like it, and then you look at a 5/8 and like that even more?
And then some bastard says the old ones are better, so you get one, and love that one even more.. see thats 3 you've got! now you've got a problem..... SOTD pictures.... razor porn.. It only takes one nice photo of a straight razor all shinny with brass pins and sexy scales and that's No4....See where this is going can't you.
I tried my best not to have more than one, but the inner magpie got the better of me Honest

The woodworkers on this forum might well agree with the following:
I get a huge sense of satisfaction seeing rows of well maintained old tools on display, knowing these items have been lovingly cared for/restored and are still in use after many many years is a feeling that's hard to explain.

I feel the same about straight razors, there is something inherently elegant about the design, an almost perfect example of form and function, and some are just works of art in their own right.

Straights tick all the boxes when it comes to collectibility, with the added bonus of being a working tool that, if maintained correctly arguably shaves better than almost any other method.

I told myself I would stop collecting when I reached a 7 day set, now it's a 31 day set, along with 5 hones, four brushes, and three strops, all in the space of eighteen months.
In my case, the question why have more than one? Translates into, why stop at one?

In essence you don't need more than one providing that you have a touch up hone. This together with a reasonable strop will see you through assuming no accidents etc. I would imagine the vast majority of working men managed with just one razor and servicemen would probably have been allowed only one in any case.

Previous posts have covered the reasons for acquiring more and more and I guarantee that when you see the Kropp that's currently in the post - you will look at straights with a new eye and almost immediately start looking at others.

Hi there,

Even though I never used a straight myself, there's still a few things I've picked up from reading about em. I could give you a few different reasons to switch off razors in the rotation.

First would be the looks....blades and scales. Crazy amount of both to choose from.
