Whips

The sporting summer continues. I watched a thrilling race at Royal Ascot yesterday. Frankie Dettori beat the hot favourite in the big race. He was then banned for 9 days for excessive use of the whip. Any one know anything about this issue? I have a feeling that if I had a whip in my hand coming down the straight heading for a tight finish, I'd use anything available to get there first.

If, as the experts claim, excessive use of the whip can lead to exhaustion (in the horse :) ), then I think its right to limit its use.
I think it'll be difficult to police though and how many racehorses are known to have suffered from excessive use of the whip in the history of the sport?
regards, beejay
