Are any of you chaps playing 'Masters' RL? Rugby league football that has been tailored to be played by gentlemen aged 35 and over. I'm intrigued about it. The rules have been amended to allow people of differing ages, physique and fitness to be able to play together. It's described as non competitive, with a nod towards friendship on and off the pitch. Etiquette dictates that you buy your opposing number a drink after the game. You wear coloured shorts which indicate what level of contact during tackles.....ranging from touching oppo with one hand to holding them with both arms. Fends and hand offs are not permitted...no kicking apart from conversions....no hand over of ball on 6th tackle (there is a scrum). You have to register to play in a team. Teams (unsurprisingly) are predominantly based in the north/northwest. Nearest club to me being Wetherby......missus tells me that's in North Yorkshire!!! I just wonder if one of the most physical games works well in a reduced contact scenario.

You got me thinking about the protocols for short colour - would regular dark colours indicate tackle as hard as you like, with yellow as no tackling at all and pink as chase me?

I love my rugby and it's without doubt a great game for socializing and making lasting friendships I can only see good things with your Masters rugby league for the over 35 just another good excuse for a older boys get together for a good piss up well worth joining the team I say.:)

Chortle....yeah Rob. Summat like that. Logical if nothing else. Red shorts = robust tackling......gold shorts = someone over 60/touch tackle. Lads aged. 60+ play the game.....there is usually a GB v Aussie game every few years. The lads may have aged and mellowed, but there is still national pride at stake.

Well worth joining for the (ahem) socialising/imbibing. Would mean getting the train....until some colleague/teamate living near Wetherby is willing to put a daft Geordie up overnight. I could invite them to stay with me for the Rugby League Magic Weekend at St James' Park next year.
