Worthy but unusual choice.

Chaz Davies has been named BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year 2011 following the results of a public vote.

Motorcyclist Davies was a surprise winner ahead of World Champion 400m hurdler Dai Greene, boxer Nathan Cleverly, triathlete Helen Jenkins and Paralympian Nathan Stephens.

Jenkins was runner-up, Stephens third, while Commonwealth, European and world champion Dai Greene was only fourth.

The award was announced at the annual BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year 2011 awards ceremony held at the Liberty Stadium in Swansea earlier this evening, which celebrated the past year in Welsh sport.

Davies' enormous potential was realised in 2011 when he won the World Supersport Championship. The 24-year-old came of age to become the first Welshman to win a world Superbike class title. He secured the overall championship crown in the 12-match series in the penultimate race of the season at Magny Cours in France. The Supersport champion is also a former BBC Wales Young Sportsman of the Year
