I recently purchased a lovely Vie-Long 2 band in Olivewood and have a blade or two I'd like to rescale with Olivewood.

Does anyone know where I can purchase some Olive wood 4mm or so thick large enough to make a set of scales from?

Not sure if some online hobby centres might carry it. If all else fails. In sure the company I got my oak work tips from do olive wood. Perhaps a phone call to them explaining what you want and what it's for may sort you with an off cut piece.

Thanks for the replies but still no luck. Would prefer a UK source tbh. Also I can always buy some ready made from Invisible edge, was just hoping to make some myself.

I haven't got the kit to stabilise wood so would prefer ready to use blanks I can cut to my size/spec.

quick google throws this place up has a variety of exotic woods including olive wood at different sizes could always give them a ring to see if they can size it for you..

This place does a lot of exotic woods in the right thickness but you may have to contact them to see if they will do Olive wood as its not on their standard list.

John Boddies at Boroughbridge North Yorkshire...They have a fantastic woodstore catering to specialist woodworkers...look 'em up online..They do mailorder as far as I know...though I like to visit and lust after the gorgeous woods in person...

Any shop catering for woodturning will almost certainly carry stocks in varying sizes..not just olive wood, but some really beautiful exotics...Just be warned...if you visit one of these shops, you can end up with tons of gorgeous bits of wood...

Thanks Rob, I'd seen that site before and was looking for it. I spoke to them and they were very helpful and could do 4mm thick Olivewood. Only downside is they have a minimum order of £25 when ordered online, so kind of defeats the purpose.

If you want to see how much you get for the minimum order, I will go halves on the total cost - assuming there's enough for a least a set of scales eack - which there should be. I prefer the size to be about 160mm long and 60 to 70 wide so that I can size it as one piece and then halve it and cut the pattern in one go.

Let me know what you think.

The biggest problem William, is getting stock at the right thickness - 4mm is about right. I don't have any means of cutting to this kind of thickness whereas the site I attached sells in various sizes starting from 3mm upwards.
