Antique Books

Afternoon all,

I've just been given a book by a relative and asked to use the power of the googlewebs to find out if it's worth anything. Google reveals very little, except that the book is from a set of 5, with a complete set being worth well into the thousands of pounds. This book is very tatty and not in a complete set.

My question therefore - should I take it to an antique bookseller and ask him/her to value or will I get a) laughed at as the condition of the cover is very poor, or b) told it's worth nothing as they want to buy it from me?

:?

Yes id take it in to be valued, but like us buying razors, the value rises steeply when a given number of people have an interest in what you have for sale.

Which book is it if you don't mind me asking.

What usually works in getting a better feel for the value of such a thing is to visit a number of second-hand (book)shops and mentioning the proprietors of same that you are actively looking for such and so book to complete your collection, would they be able to find one for you, and what would the cost be...

As Henk as mentioned, face to face dialogue with people in the trade is far more reliable in gaining accurate information, your choice of direction to go from there is time and research.

May well be worth it though.
