Why do vintage scales collapse?

I have bought a couple of vintage straight razors lately with scales that have collapsed in the middle leaving no room for the blade. No real problem because I enjoy making new scales but would be interesting knowing why this is happening to some old straight razors.

If you open the razor and put the scales in hot water for a minute and open or adjust or bent back the scales and immediately put it under cold water or leave it to cool down depending on situation, may help sometimes. But do not go with what I say as it may not work. I have tried it few times and it worked, obviously depending on the material used.
I hope I managed to explain and good luck

I cut and bin the scales, happy to make new ones, but previous owner often seem to have been surprised by the state of scales and chipped blade so extra work is needed honing. Normally I would not bother but got three otherwise nice looking blades that I will try to save.
