Wedding day scent suggestions

Hi

Would like to pick the noses (sorta!) of the fragrance fans here.

I'm getting married this October and I'm looking for a "special" scent for the day and for future special occasions when I'd like the scent to bring up memories of the day (birthdays, anniversary etc). So not something I'll be wearing everyday. Been looking but so much choice! Nothing I've sampled as yet fits the bill.

As background, if there is a "me" scent it's patchouli. If I have a signature it would be Givenchy Gentleman. Also like Davidoff Zino, Rive Gauche and Monotheme Patchouli Leaves (I do like this, but it's kinda weak). These are all scents my fiancee really likes on me too. The wedding venue is an old converted coach house, kinda rural/rustic. Not a formal wedding at all.

Like I said, something special, long lasting but not too in your face, bit classy but not formal - maybe well-dressed patchouli head! Doesn't have to be patchouli based, I just know these scents suit me.

If any suggestions can be compared to any of those mentioned would be useful. Looking forward to TSR guided sample splurge!

Cheers in advance
Lee

First of all, may I offer you my warmest congratulations.

If it's Patchouli you're after, they don't come more 'patchouli' than the Santa Maria Novella take on this. Personally, I love this. But be warned - it is full-on! It smells like incense. Wearing it in a bar one evening I was described as smelling like joss sticks.

Far more subtle, but still with that 'vibe' is Muschio (Musk), again by SMN. This is soft and elegant.

I should own up that I am a devotee of this perfume house, and own several of its fragrances.

See basenotes reviews of the Patchouli here, and the Muschio here.

Whatever your final decision - have a fantastic day, and many years of happy marriage!

Thanks for the suggestions, and moreover for the well wishes. Appreciate it.

I've sampled Eau Sauvage (and the parfum version). Very classy scents. However overly citrus scents don't seem to work that well on me and the parfum version was a little heavy. I like it but didn't wow me.

I'd looked at the SMN Patchouli, definitely sounds like something I'd like. Maybe "too much" for the occasion but also I'd ideally like to sample before a full bottle. Same with Patchouli Nobile 1942 and Reminiscence Patchouli. Will be looking to get some samples, and will have a gander at Heritage too among them.

One that looked like it might fit the bill somewhat is L'Instant de Guerlain Pour Homme. Will try to have a snifter or get a sample. Any opinions on that one?

And yes, was definitely planning get the other half's approval!

Cheers

So finally managed to get to some department stores in a couple of shopping centres (shopping centres, uuugh!). With the missus to be of course. Found my wedding fragrance - and it ain't patchouli after all!

Tried many scents, the Tom Fords, Geurlains, etc etc. The only two that had any balls and character were Givenchy Gentleman and Paco Rabanne Pour Homme. The fiancee agreed. All the rest were just meh at best. That said I did try Heritage and LIDG. Heritage was actually really nice, very classy, but very citrus and those scents just don't work on me. LIDG was a strange one. Loved the opening (my fiancee said it reminded her of Obsession but fresher). Then it changed quickly to mainly patchouli, then to a citrus/vanilla vibe. I love patchouli but the note in this was incredibly dull. Had it stayed as it opened i probably would have went with LIDG.

Finally, my fiancee called me over to the Gucci section, which I would have normally walked straight past. The scent I ended up choosing was Gucci Guilty Absolute.

Upon sniffing we both had the same reaction as with Gentleman and the Paco Rabanne. It had character and balls (although smaller and less hairy than the other two) and just seemed to fit the intended occasion. It's kind of resinous/medicinal, masculine, and very autumnal. Strong but not in your face. I got a sample to see how longevity etc was and it ticks all the boxes.

So in the end, an unexpected choice but one we're both happy with.

Thanks again for the suggestions and wishes.

I read today that you can go to Harrods and Penhaligons will mix you up your own fragrance while you have a coffee. Make a day of it and get something truely special that you've created together.

Edit - Don't read the thread title and just post... Enjoy your day
