Vintage Razor Servicers/restorers in the UK

well when you get ready its easy, the razor goes to cap murphy for cleaning and take down and necessary repairs, he then sends it to chris for replate. then it goes back to cap for assembly and shipping back to you

That's a load of logistics mate :( Chris did not mention the Captain in his email. He just said contact him in December and post the razor to him if I use him. I guess he deals with the Captain his end. I found this old thread about Jay in the UK. I am liking the free bag lol. It looks like a hairs breath between them so ultimately it will boil down to who can do the job soonest and who "quotes me happy" as an insurance ad here says.

its your choice, its just that IF the razor needs repairs it goes to cap who takes it down and does any fixes. who then sends it to chris for plating if you want it plated.
Chris says he can do a replate without needing the razor taken apart, but some spots turn out best if its in pieces

so he or you send it to this Captain guy? Oh well it will be new year before either can take a new job anyway :(

matteob sends the razor to the captain who takes it apart and fixes it. The cap then sends it to chris who does the replate job. chris sends it back to the cap for assembly. cap sends it back to matteob.

I don't need one at the moment but for future reference are there people in the UK who offer the service above i.e strip down etc that the Razor Emporium does in the US?I saw the threads mentioning a member here called Dr Terror but I don't think he is around now. Reason being I have jumped down a rabbit hole and bought a lovely, ready to Fatboy for a good price. Just want to know where to go should I **** it up.

Since the question is what you should do if you mess it [the Fatboy] up (and it doesn't appear to have any family/sentimental value) I'd say the best option is to simply buy another one.

To me having a razor sent out for service means the razor either;
- has sentimental value,
- is rare,
- its value is so high that a repair service will be significantly less than a re-acquisition, and/or
- having something non-repair related done to it such as re-plating.

a replated fat boy in any condition case can easily cost 100-120$ here on ebay usa.

a decent mechanical condition fat boy without a case can cost 40-60 depending on how ugly the finish looks. Toss in a 60 dollar replate.. and its priceless again

Yea well I have a choice of two great guys if I am prepared to wait. I am leaning towards the guy in the States because he does more (even paints the spring) and seems a very nice guy judging by his emails. Now you guys have voted Captain Comb over in and the Dollar is sinking maybe he will be cheaper too lol. I love the razor as a bit of an engineering. Looks like I paid about the going rate then. Mine is not tatty but definitely has some wear but mechanically very smooth with that perfect quarter turn that everyone goes on about. No case but not fussed about that as will be keeping it for my own use and pleasure and not to flog on ebay. I will keep you posted @Bezoar

razorplate.com has a waiting list for a reason.

quality of work. method of work. reliability. a warranty unlike all the others I have seen.

Captain Murphy is a mechanical lunatic that has good work with razors. He is the only person known to be able to fix an open comb tto.
