Vintage Gillette 3 piece NEW Open Comb advice on technique (17/06/2017 18:30 update)

OK, however I stand by my theory that they switched to safety bar razors as they simply shave smoother on the whole for most (note I did not say all) men and Gillette at that point in time needed a "home run" as they had lost tons of $$ due to encroaching competition & the Great Depression.

Well..The 1904 Gillette Patent Stopped Anybody Legally Using a DE System Until the Patents Expired in 1921..This was about the Same Time as the Great Depression..But..It Opened the Door for Other Companies to Compete with them..Which they Obviously Did..Profits Plummeted..King Gillette Almost Ruined the Company by Breaching a Patent that Auto Strop took them to Court for..Gillette was Basically Taken Over by Auto Strop Management..o_O

King Gillette Died a Broken Man about 9 Months Later in his Chair..Ta Ta..:)

I must say in regards to quality control, my OC NEW razor I believe is approximately from the late 30s early 40s the build quality is exceptional compare to say my EJ89, one thing I am unsure is how tight to tighten it up is there a risk of stripping threads due to age etc
Just put it on hand tight don't force it. Let me know what you think.
I hope you like the shave as much as I do.
I prefer my Single Ring old type to the EJ DE89, I find it just as smooth and more efficient, but as they say ymmv.

I have updated the title to attract a bigger audience for some more advice,
I shaved this evening with the NEW and the following comparison is against my EJ 89.
Firstly I had a beard growth of around 48 hours I did my usual prep which leaves me with no issues when using my EJ. The ONLY difference I made beside from razor was I switched to a Gillette 7 o'clock green instead of my usual silver blue.
I had a ok shave however all hope is not lost I had no nicks by the way but I am putting it to technique, here's why,
On the first pass WTG I had the razor angled quite low to my face from the comb and when shaving the razor left behind grooves in the shave cream and produced lots of tugging and not a great result, I rinsed re lathered and went again WTG this time I rested the top cap on my face and pulled the handle down till I felt the blade tug and continued like that, now I got a relatively good shave however I still require some guidance on technique.
Having never used an open comb can anyone offer me advice on the correct technique for this razor?
As it was my first shave I will of course give it another go.

Your second method is the way to go and you'll find the angle instinctively after a couple of shaves.
I'd also suggest going back to the GSB, one of my favourite blades and you obviously like them as well.

Yes well in fact I only recently found the GSB to be my favourite blade about 2 months ago I will be going back to it as I wasn't sure just how aggressive this razor is now I know it's not too bad so I will try again my second method with the GSB

I don't find the old or new type to be aggressive shavers. They were made for the masses and most people want a comfortable shave.

I'm also a fan of these, as has been previously alluded to the New "flat bottom" and Tech "flat bottom" are essentially the same razor, the former having teeth and the latter a solid bar... Aside from this the head geometry is identical. I find the correct angle is the same one used with Feather DE's (well the Feather is itself a clone of this design!) So that means keeping a very shallow angle... At least, thats what works for me.

My NEW LC gives a great shave with Gillette Yellows, Greens, Rubie Plus, Silver Blues, and loves Feathers.
Yes, if you left 'grooves' in the lather then your angle was wrong.
I find the NEW LC to be a tad closer shave than a Tech.
Couldn't call it aggressive. Very smooth to use.
However, mine is a restored NEW from sportshaving, so maybe the polishing and replate makes it glide better?

Now you've had time to hone your technique and changed blades, how does it compare to the EJ?

Hello,
To be honest I have tried too many blades to know entirely, I first tried the Gillette Green which didn't work well so switched to the GSB which was better but I then decided to try the Astra SP, the blade I began with which seemed even better. However Thrs/Fri I had a few issues, I washed my face as usual applied some TOBS St James shave cream to my brush and face lathered and immediately I had a lot of stinging and slight redness on my cheeks more towards my nose not in the beard area so the razor doesn't pass it, now I have used TOBS St James for the past 3 weeks with no issues till now and I started using an Alum Block since Wednesday which has worked wonders on reducing the redness I sometimes get at the base of my neck but it does not sting when I apply it which I assume is a good sign, the only thing I can think of is when I caught the sun a week or so ago any other possible suggestions?

If it's not in the beard area, it's not a result of shaving.
It could be the sun or have you changed shower gel?
You might need medical advice if it persists.

My immediate thought was that it's not to do with shaving but I could t rule it out completely yet, I believe it more to be to do with the sun as I haven't changed shower gel or anything however I will keep an eye and see what happens, I will shave again with the Astra SP blades as I quite like them in the NEW as opposed to the others I have I even have some feathers I may try too. Have you used feathers or any other blade in the NEW?

Blades are probably the most subjective item in DE shaving.
I could tell you my five favourites and you may only like one or all five.
In the new I like Astra SP, GSB, Polsilver and Wilkinson Sword. I prefer Kai to Feather but don't think they're worth the price.
My favourite all rounder is the Astra SP.
I hope your skin clears up.
