Time for an upgrade

I'm going to suggest a split.

Buy these two:

A) post war gillette tech.
B) A qshave adjustable.

I'M new to this mind, but I have a 50's tech and it's fantastic. Cost me buttons as well.

The qshave is cheap as chips and highly regarded.

The tech should be easier in the bumps. The qshave you can mess with aggressive settings.

Win-win

Hi all, recently joined the forum, been de shaving for a few years but until now I just stuck with my EJ DE89L, the head threads got worn and in fairness to EJ they are sending me out a new one so credit to them there.

Anyway while waiting for this new head to arrive I decided to start looking around at new razors( or new to me) . The list is pretty endless as to what is available. I'd like to get something else, the 89L has served me well and will keep it. The blades I like to use are Astra's, Polsilver's, personna. I did like the 7 o clock but just haven't used them in a while. I have a few different soaps and creams that I like .

Generally I shave fine, but I find I do get red marks and bumps sometimes so using too much pressure or possibly too many passes leaves me a bit raw. I know the 89L is a mild razor so maybe need a step in razor? This would mainly occur if I have 2/3 days growth.

I know every opinion is different, what works for one doesn't work for others.
I'm open to any suggestions vintage/ new , OC , adjustable, slant. Thanks for reading

Ideally I'd like to keep it around 50 euro give or take.
What about the Rockwell 6C instead of the 6S? $45 + $20 delivery and delivery is EU friendly so no additional tax or duty.

I can also recommend the following

Fatip Piccolo, around £20 - Great razor for the price
Vintage Gillette Tech, price varies but can be got pretty cheap, try B/S/T
QShave Futur clone from Aliexpress, about £5 delivered

You could probably get all 3 of the above for less than 50 Euro.

I can also recommend a Vintage Gillette Slim (or Super Adjustable), I would try B/S/T first to see if anyone has one, you can get them on eBay or Etsy but prices vary. Beware you need to watch out as some may be a bit out of whack due to being dropped etc. so eBay can be a bit of a gamble. You should be able to get a decent one for less than 50 Euros but it could be a waiting game for the right razor at the right price, plus the effort of hunting on eBay/Etsy.

The above are all based on my own experience, all of these razors give me great shaves, my most recent acquisition is the 6C which is great razor.

Where is the 6c available for that price?

Why do I get the feeling that having started de shaving 3 1/2 years ago and only having 1 de razor in that time that I'm going to have at least 5 by the end of the week and the 50 quid budget spent a few times over lol
You have done pretty well to keep to one DE razor for 3 1/2 years, it is a dangerous place for your wallet here, but after 3 1/2 years you deserve at least one new razor.

I usually lubricate the threads weekly with mineral oil. It stops wear on the threads. It is great that Edwin Jagger are replacing the head but the new threads will wear just as quickly unless lubricated.

I would suggest the Progress but the Parker Variant is getting good reviews. You can increase the aggressiveness for the first pass on a multi-day stubble and then dial down for subsequent passes.
Just had a quick look think I'd be doing extremely well to get a fat boy for 50 quid in good condition, about 80 quid plus delivery (import duty also) seems to be the going rate for a good/v good, others are like you say going for nearly 200
I am doubtful you will pick up a Fatboy in good condition and still stay within budget. The prices for the Fatboy have rocketed. A good slim adjustable should be within your budget though.
I do like the slant bar so the Merkur 37C or 39C (long handle) are well within your budget. It could be a good option if you suffer from ingrowing hair and have sensitive skin.
Hope this helps and welcome to the forum.

Hi there,

First of all, the Merkurs have a different head design than an old Gillette so the feeling on your face while shaving will not be the same. Not necessarily bad or better, just different. In my case I like the Merkur Progress a good bit, but not as much as some Gillettes. You gotta try each razor to see how it fits....no getting around that.

Slims are at least as popular as the Fatboy.....maybe even more so and yeah, they don't shave the same. Also as another member typed, not all Slims or Fatboys will give the same results because of one reason or another. Buying an old adjustable on ebay is a real crapshoot as someone else mentioned and you're better off asking here in the forum.

I have few various razors in good shaving shape if you decide on a classic from the 50's or 60s at a reasonable price. Feel free to send me a message. Things like superspeeds, a Slim, and also the usual kinds of Techs. Plus, there's a very nice shaving late 40s Aristocrat that I have been using recently.

Shipping to Limeyland for one razor is kinda pricey but the decent prices make it a wash. No problem if you wanna skip it but figured I would make the offer.

Actually, I think the prices have gone down in the last year as I have sold several. Too often people glance at the "Buy Now" prices which are almost always inflated. If you follow a few auctions closely you can often get one for approx. $35. As well, it seems the allure of the "Fatboy" has waned as many have discovered why Gillette only made it for a short time: it's not a great daily razor and hardly svelte & nimble.

I think it's quite normal for people new at this to go on "bender" and buy all sorts of different razors, but in the end most settle on a couple that best suit their needs.

Gillette Slim adjustable. As you've had only one razor, it sounds as if you would benefit from experimenting with different types of shaves ranging from mild to very assertive, to see which suits you best. The Slim is much cheaper than the Fatboy, but performs just as well IMO. With the Fatboy, you are paying a large premium for scarcity and the coolness factor, but with the Slim, you get to use James Bond's Goldfinger razor, and nothing is cooler than that.

Or the Fatip Piccolo. An unbelievably good, non-zamak modern razor, that is well within your budget.

Thanks for the offer @dodgy much appreciated.

@Bogeyman agreed very easy to sucked in here and end up going mad buying a load of different razors, I think I've done quite well to limit it to just one razor for the last few years, but totally see what you are saying.

@Les Dupondt thanks for the info.

I think razors I will look more into for the time being
Fatip piccolo
Merkur 37c
Merkur progress
Gillette slim
Rockwell 6c

Cheers for the all the info gents much appreciated, very knowledgeable community on here, I can see why it was recommended to me
