Synthetic, are people warming up to it?

When I first started out on this forum I never thought of trying a synthetic. I suppose I thought that traditionally it was a Badger or a Boar, and ignored the man made fibre. What really changed my mind though was a free Vie Long synthetic.

I've now have two synthetic and my opinion is that they are indeed very good. As has been said and I've said in the past they are in maintenance terms easier than a Badger or Boar. They simply wash out easier. All in general have strong backbones making lathering a breeze.

Badger are nice for a touch of luxury, a nicely broken in Boar is great, but for a decent everyday/travelling brush a synthetic is the way to go.

1. Yes, synthetic is very much a viable option. In fact, some people have sold off their badgers and kept only synth brushes.

What he said. My favorite remains a Plisson but whether it's worth the $30 price difference vs the decent Plissoft models...well probably not. I have a boar but it will never see much use, one gets used to the hassle free synths real fast.

After many years of using boar and (a few) badger brushes, now I use synthetics exclusively. The price/performance is great and they are care free. My most used synthetics are Simpsons CH2, Plissoft, Omega S10065, and Edwin Jagger 25mm. They are all great for me.

Yep I have switched to Synthetics from Badger to. I have the Edwin Jagger XL Silvertip and Fine Stout 24mm, both superb [emoji106]

I'm not sure what the tuxedo knots are?

My first synthetic was a Chubby 2 and it lasted 6 weeks before the knot fell out of the handle in bits! Never again! Overpriced and overhyped!

Hopefully that doesn't happen to mine, really enjoyed it today!

Did you contact Simpsons? Did anything come of it?

Yes I got a refund from the retailer who informed me that there were quality issues regarding Simpson. That's why I did not go for a replacement. Instead I got the Fine Stout which is similar to the Cubby but less than half price.

what are the thoughts on synthetics now? When I last dipped my toe into 'real' shaving they were a bit of a dirty word but there seems to be a huge selection now.

Badger always seemed to bring me out in a rash (even when using a bowl) and boar wasn't much better (even with a cart and I never got the reaction just putting the cream on my face).

Is synthetic a viable option?
Do they need to be treated different?
Is cream rather than soap the best bet?

I love the Simpsons style and history so am quite happy to see a chubby 2 with good reviews, I might of even messaged them to enquire about a '57' in synthetic.

Thanks

To me, synthetics are the perfect option:

Pros:
- durable and easy maintenance
- quick drying, therefore perfect for travelling
- affordable
- cruelty free (I am not usually very sensible to this argument, I eat meat, but seeing a video about Chinese badgers skinned alive changed my point of view...)
- very soft on the skin

Cons:
- not enough expensive for badger snobs... :D

All my brushes are synthetic: Plisson, Maggard, Kent and Chinese 2nd or 3rd generation.
