SOTD: Saturday 6th January - Friday 12th January 2018.

Greetings All,

Thursday shave

One day growth and warm shave

Preparation – Showered then face washed with Clique Liquid facial soap (mild)
Soap: TOBS Sandalwood
Razor: Rockwell 6C (4P)
Blade: Astra SP (4th)
Brush: RazoRock 400 (face lather)

Post Shave: Hot then cold water rinse, Alum, Nivea 2 Phase followed by Michael Kors EDT.

Astra SP Test

Day 4

The TOBS Sandalwood shaving cream I have found to be one of the slickest so can mask a multitude of sins. The first two passes (WTG and XTG) with the Astra SP was fine and all seemed on track for it to thump the Gillette Nacet down to third. But, yes there's a but, then to remain consistent I needed to complete a third pass (ATG). Trouble started which the TOBS could not hide. The shave started to feel uncomfortable, the blade ‘draggy' and I ended up with several weepers and a nick, one that Alum would not stop and for me (that's) a first. Not realising, only when I arrive at work wash my hands did I see crimson on my collar. Also still had some irritation, though not as much as yesterday (that could be down to the TOBS).

On a side note, I did do a first vs fourth day Alum test. Day 1 had no feedback, no burn whereas Day 4 was like molten lava, due to the irritation and the Alum was needed due to the weepers.

So, in conclusion, the Astra SP is a nice comfortable blade, but for me, I cannot use it after three uses. I would not like to try the Astra with a lessor quality shaving soap after two uses. Saying that, the Gillette Nacet went on and I used for shaves 4 and 5, keeps it in second place. So,
  1. Shark SS
  2. Gillette Nacet
  3. Astra SP
However, I will be trying a nice new Astra SP in my Gillette Slim Adjustable as (that's) what you kind folks recommended.

Cheers,

Brian

I tried a number of products for the first time and have done a very brief review on each.

ATT Calypso M1: This 7075 Aluminium razor is significantly lighter and much smoother than the Stainless Steel M1 I used to own. The fit and finish is also second to none. It's a great razor.

Black Ship Grooming Ghost Ship: As with all Black Ship soaps this performs excellently. I'm not 100% sure about the scent though. Vanilla, Sandalwood and Grapefruit makes for a very interesting combination.

Fitjar Slatteroy AS Balm: Great balm, great scent. Nuff said.

Bulldog Pre-Shave Oil: I was surprised at the performance of this oil. It partially absorbs into the skin and the scent, whilst not particularly pleasant, wasn't too bad. It's the best performing product I've used in the Bulldog line so far and I'd give it a score of 7/10.

Faena Beard Oil: I used this on my goatee and was pleasantly surprised at the scent. The ingredients include castor oil, almond oil, grapeseed oil and vitamin E. The website states that the scent is amber and bergamot and I must admit that I've never smelt a beard or shave oil quite like it. [emoji846]

Soap - Santa Maria Novella Tobaco Toscana;
Brush - RazoRock Plissoft 24mm;
Face lather;
Razor - ER 1912 British Made;
Blade - Gem SS;
Post - Thayer's Rose Petal and Aloe Vera;
EdC - Alt-Innsbruck (not in pic)

Sublime. I don't think I've ever had less than excellent shaves with the English 1912 variants. It's good that these razors turn up regularly for sale. Everybody (that's) interested in SE shaving should at least try one.

The SMV is a tremendous soap; even though it is tallow-free. Its scent is amazing, as are its menthol properties. OK, it's not cheap, but you get loads in a tub. And, as I'm fond of mentioning from time to time, the Alt-Innsbruck compliments it perfectly.

Astra Superior Stainless (1)
Valobra Cologne
Alum Block, Nivea Balm & Superdrug Sierran Breeze

My first use of the Astra SS and not a bad blade, I have always used the SP in the past. An aggressive shave however as I wasn't mindful of the razor head and loaded it with the aggressive setting. A weeper or two but nothing bad.

This brush is superb, forgot how good it is, lathers with little effort and I find it perfect with a good soap like Valobra. The scent is inoffensive, supposed to be Cologne but to me it is simply soapy. But excellent none the less. If you're looking for a good tallow soap you couldn't go wrong with Valobra.

Thank you Wayne. The Razor is vintage. It is made in the US, probably around 1940. It is called a Krect Slant.

It is a torsion slant, relative mild, forgiving but still quite efficent.
What's makes it special is the connection handle to head. There is no thread or screw. The topcap has a kind of hook that goes through a slot in the baseplate and fits into a counterpart on top of the handle. When assembled without blade all parts are relative loose. With a blade loaded, the hole connection gets under tension because of the thickness of the blade. Ingenious solution IMO. Here som pictures.

A fascinating insight Marco and thank you very much for sharing. :)

Omega 11126 boar

Schick Golden 500 - J3
Schick Proline ( 4 )
Pitralon Original A/S lotion

A Shave yesterday with a PAL adj is always a hard act to follow,but the J3 is not a bad choice as it is a very smooth but effective Razor.
Despite the length of the Handle I find it to be very manouvreable,especially around the neck.All in all a good close Shave with no mishaps or post Shave problems.
