SOTD . SATURDAY 21st JULY - FRIDAY 27th JULY 2018.

Sunday 22nd July PM

5th DE shave

Prep: Shower, Nivea Sensitive Face Wash then Nuage shave oil
Cream: ES Natural
Brush: ES Medium Jock synthetic
Razor: Merkur 34c
Blade: Personna (2)
Post: Cold rinse, Nivea Sensitive Post Shave balm and Agua de Colonia Concentrada Lotion

Not as good today. 5 passes then lots of touch ups from various angles. I was expecting a fair bit of razor burn but was sweating profusely after a hot shower. The sweat along with the ES lather provided lots of lubrication!

Nivea and Agua de Colonia Concentrada Body Lotion produced a subtle lemon scent.

Still enjoyed the “me time”!

UPDATE.....

After about an hour the burn started....in particular my neck either side of my windpipe under my chin. Ooft [emoji91][emoji91][emoji91]

Towards the end of my shave I was really struggling to get BBS under there so used the blade buffing method as shown by mantic on YouTube.

It did work but maybe not best to do that after so many initial passes. [emoji91][emoji91][emoji91]

Threw plenty of balm on and turned the house upside down and shook it looking for anything with Aloe Vera in it. Finally found some aftersun lotion which seemed to eventually do the trick[emoji91][emoji91][emoji91] either that or Fireman Sam was getting a call! [emoji91][emoji91][emoji91]

You live and learn! Did I mention the [emoji91][emoji91][emoji91]?

Many thanks to Rob (@Blackmass) for getting the Gibbs safely back to me and for gifting me this wonderful vanilla and sandalwood cream.
Cream two days in a row is unusual for me but I'm not complaining as they both made excellent lather and both were very gratefully received.
It was good to shave with the Gibbs again, very smooth and for a DE very efficient.
All finished off nicely with the Alphy & Bess balm.
Happy Shaving one and all.

This soap is made in Italy by Extro, but as it is made for the foroafeitado forum I consider it Spanish ... ;-)

FIVE passes? How come you felt the need to do so many? How many times did you go over the neck area? Whilst I like the thought of BBS, in reality I tend to pay the price, on the neck especially. If I do an ATG pass, I DON'T go ATG on the neck. Early last week I stupidly forgot this and went full on ATG on my neck. My face felt sore for hours afterwards AND I caught a scar that hadn't quite healed up, so I ended up in quite a mess after that shave.

I'm still trying to decide whether to bother going ATG at all. If I leave out that pass, the shave just doesn't feel close enough on the cheeks / under the jawline, which ends up annoying me until the next shave. If I go ATG, it takes a while for the redness to calm down yet it feels like a closer, better shave. But regardless, I simply can't go ATG on the neck.

Sorry to hear of your pain, we've all been there though. I wouldn't shave for at least a couple of days to give your skin time to heal and recover. I've found the Personna blades to be on the mild side. The Merkur 34C is on the mild side too, hence probably why you needed so many passes.

I would recommend you try a few blades from Gillette. I've found they have the right balance between sharpness and smoothness. I'd suggest the 7 o'clock range, Nacet, Silver Blue and Platinum. If you have haven't got any of these please send me a PM and I'll send you a few?

I'd also recommend you buy a bottle of British Barber Association After Shave Balm. Yes it's expensive but worth every penny. If you do a search on this forum you'll see how highly regarded it is by other members. It's the only thing I've found to act quickly and sooth after a bad shave. Thankfully I don't have them very often so it will last a long.

After each pass there was still a lot of stubble, even after the final passes. Up until now I've been really lucky as I've managed a BBS result.

Five complete passes in total but even then I wasn't happy with my neck and jaw line, hence I went with the blade buffing method.

I was fortunate that I didn't have any redness after, even when the burn kicked in. Lots of balms seemed to help.

As I said, I've learned from it - don't do so many passes and I'll maybe consider the buffing method for my 3rd and final pass.

Sunday 22nd July

D R Harris Lavender Shave Stick
RazoRock 400
Merkur 34C HD
Wilkinson Sword old stock (England) (3)
Witch Hazel Mixture
Floid Mentolado Vigoroso Aftershave

Unusually, I have shaved three days in a row.
I blame it on the Lavender Shave Stick !
I enjoy my shaves more when I skip a day though, so I'll resume my usual regime.

Five passes over the neck & then touch-ups. Ouch. Hurts just thinking about it. Yeah, you live and learn.

Good call @Blackmass on the Gillette blades. I haven't tried Personna blades but from reading lots of blade threads I've tried to avoid the milder blades especially as I use an already mild razor, the DE89. As Rob said, sharpness & smoothness. . . its our holy grail, surely. Also perhaps stick with a blade for a month as you improve your technique, though not necessarily the Personna, one of the gillettes mentioned.

Thanks Rob.

I'm still at the very early stages of DE shaving and expect to make lots of mistakes along the way. This has been my first painful one after a week, so I think I've got off lightly![emoji91][emoji91][emoji91]

Trying various blades is the advice I'm being given regularly. I'm looking at getting a variety pack ASAP. I'll defo look at trying the blades you recommend.

I've also got quite a few different products on the way so I'm hoping they'll make a difference, but I'll change one thing at a time so I know what does and doesn't work for me.

I think that I became blasé after my good results before now......and paid the price!

My skin did calm down eventually last night and seems okay today, but I'll defo give it another day or two.

Thanks for all the advice. I'll let you know how the next shave goes! [emoji1360]

Mon 23rd July

RazoRock Plissoft 24mm
Cyril Salter Solid soap
ATT Se1 + Windrose Handle
Schick Proline [ 10 ]
Pitralon Polar A/S Lotion

I am really enjoying Shaves with my AC/SE Razors, especially the heavyweights. I actually prefer then to DEs as they for me are more forgiving, no flex in the blade maybe.
Today was again very smooth and comfortable, though the quality of the finished shave was perhaps not quite there, the blade was on its 10th outing so needs changing.
