Shave routine help

You'll get there. Once you work out what works for you; hardware, software and technique - it will come together. It's about practice & doing the simple things well.

It's not just about applying no pressure when shaving - also about not putting too much pressure on yourself. I learnt within a week that ATG pass is trouble. So dont bother. Never had a BBS shave, due to sensitivity on my neck. So dont chase it. I get very decent shaves following the basically the same techniques from 5 years ago. I mapped my hair growth - shave with the grain, accross the grain & thats that. You will work out what's best for you. Your skin will adapt.

Yes, plenty of expensive rabbit holes. Enjoy. Hang around the Lending Pool to experience different equipment. Do the simple things well! :)

I can't really add anything different to the previous replies.

Only thing I'd say is I always thought I had sensitive skin and used nothing other than products designed for sensitive skin. Then one day I used standard products and my skin really responded well to it. I also gave up on balm and use after shave splash - my skin is pretty oily so balm was making matters worse.

So now my usual routine is to have a nice wash, use proraso pre shave, proraso soap and proraso aftershave splash - and use vokshod blades (I'm convinced the teflon coating makes a huge difference)

Keep up the good work and enjoy yourself :)

Wickhams is a fantastic performing soap, so that'll help.
Whilst I love and too use the Charcoal face wash, it's very drying, if I were you i'd Only use it on non shaving days

Still waiting on the Wickhams to arrive...... getting irritable now lol, was shipped on Tuesday.....
So yesterday tried a cold water shave, which seemed to work well. Used ES bay rum shaving cream, Nacet blade, thayers and moisturiser

No prep. Shave with a good blade. Lots of folk like Astra blades and I know blades are very personal but I wouldn't give an Astra to my worst enemy. But hey! that's just me. Try a Voshkod. A good soap and minimal pressure shaving with cold water then follow with one product nothing fancy just Aloe Vera Gel. You can thank me later...No honestly thank me later. Your skin will love me.

Working away on the ships I don't really get the time or comfort (Try Shaving on a moving platform) to get too fussy so my principle is keep it simple.

A shower to remove the daily muck more than anything. It is amazing how much a razor gets clogged without a good clean. A good quality cream mixed in whatever cereal bowl I can grab from the galley and all lathered up with whatever brush I decided to take.

I usually take an R89 because I have so much faith in what it does. Not the best razor in my world but it is so damn forgiving and when your world is constantly on the move it certainly helps. Whatever blade is my fad of the moment. Usually just 2 passes.

Finish with a cold rinse and throw on some Cade balm because it suits my skin and job done.

I tend to use a similar routine when home with Witch Hazel and a scent added. The scent side isn't really necessary with a bunch of salty arses sailors. A bit of diesel behind the ears might be more appropriate.

Overall though I tend to find the less fuss the better the shave and the best advise I have gleaned from TSR is learn your face and which direction your hair grows. I soon learnt that I'd been getting it wrong for years.

Morning gents,

Have continued with my re-adjusted routine with some good results. I even managed to shave on consecutive days! May seem like nothing to a lot of you guys who shave every day, but the first time I have ever done it and my face didn't feel too sore after :) Had a little area of 'pinkness' on my neck but think this was due to messing about with a different razor and cutting myself a bit. I now have confidence to try a different blade (Nacet) and have just bought some new soap from the Wickham soap Co. I've only ever used creams, but there seems to be a lot more choice? for soaps, which has sparked my interest.... I can see this may become expensive!

The Wickham soaps are outstanding. I have three that I use on rotation (Classic 24, Club Cola, Parma Violet) and I have the matching balms that are equally outstanding as the soaps.

Glad to see things improving for you :)
