Review: The General SE razor

While waiting for mine The General, can someone of you tell what blades are the best for him. Tnx

P.S. I know YMMV and I have smple of all blades, but what is your suggestion to start with. Tnx
I'm using a Feather Pro, but I've seen somewhere or the other that people have had good results from Kai "Pinks" (Captain Titan Mild).

My stock of blades consists of these:-
- Feather Professional
- Feather Professional Super
- Feather Proguard
- Kai Captain Sharpblade
- Kai Captain
- Kai Captain Mild (Pinks)
- Schick Proline P-20
- Kamisori

However, not all will fit every razor, so it's worth checking what the makers recommend. Colonial seem to major on the Feather Pro, but there are some relevant comments on blades in the Comments section of the Colonial website.

Day 2 with the General, and I'm highly impressed with it. The Feather blade has lost its rough feel, and this razor will produce a perfect result in two passes.

I generally (sic) favour heavy razors, both SE and DE, but there's something about this one and the Alumigoose which, for me, makes them feel easier in use than the stainless Mongoose and Claymore. After puzzling it over, I think that the 50mm width and bulk of the heavy razors just makes them that much less manoeuvrable; whilst the aluminium ones are a bit easier to "float" around the face, even considering the width. When my Hawks land, I may be closer to confirming my theory.

I will be trying my General with other handles, but I have a feeling that the configuration as issued will be hard to beat.

So what handle do you think works best?

I've ordered the head only and thought about trying the MÜHLE Standard handle, or the one from the Fatip Grande...i dont have much choices...

I've tried it with a couple of Windrose stainless handles, and it works well enough. However, I've decided that I like it best with its own aluminium handle.

I don't have either of the razors you mention, but as far as I understand it, the Fatip Grande is the closer in length to the General handle, and would probably be the first to try.

Again, I'm no expert, but I think the main factor in determining how well the General shaves is not the weight, but the angle of use. If so, then the handle length is a major consideration.

Happy Christmas.

I have never seen the need to try an alternative handle , if it ain't broke.........
It is superb as it is,but, if you bought a head only , maybe a lightweight one ?
Quite agree. The problem nowadays is actually finding a lightweight handle. I bought an aluminium one from Windrose (see photo), but I don't think they do it any more. The alternative is something like a titanium handle, but I think you'd be able to buy two complete Generals for the price of one handle.

Hi Derrick,
As one of those who recommended the General to me, I have to say Thanks. On my 3rd Shave and despite its weight or lack of, it Shaves fantastically as it is.

Hi Mike , I am very glad to hear it , it is really a superb razor at a give away price , I was initially astounded that such a lightweight could offer such a good shave but there you go , are you using the Kai Milds or the Feathers in it ?
