I never tried bowl lathering really. I think that became a fashion with the resurrection of wet shaving, about ten years ago. What I can remember of my youth is that "everyone" made the lather on the soap cake and their face, and didn't bother with a bowl.

I am basically still shaving in the way that I started some thirty years ago; if it ain't broken, don't fix it ;)

Impressive victory for the facelathering camp! With all the photos that people post that show shaving bowls, i thought this would be a closer fight.

P.S.: @Blademonkey still can't make up his mind! :p:p:D:D

I'm a bowl latherer, I find I can get a better lather through that method but until the weekend I will try face lathering, because it has been a while since I last face lathered. I usually only face lather when using a stick.

Face lathering. It gets straight to the point. Ultimately you're preparing your face and stubble for shaving with a surgically sharp instrument, I think this is best achieved by starting directly on that area. I do think it is easier to learn lather making for new wet shavers by bowl lathering though.

Well, we had to learn it without the help of YouTube and the Internet, and we also survived [emoji14]

Sometimes I feel people are overcomplicating it now.

Mainly a face latherer now, since switching to synthetics. My Fine Stout brush is an ideal for face lathering. Even my EJ XL silver tip synthetic works on my face, it's a real lather monster!

As I can totally embrace the idea that the journey is as important as the destination, I love the rituals of drinking tea, wine, the switching on of the amps to warm them up before lovingly producing a pristine platter from its sleeve in anticipation of listening to a piece of music as closely as possible to how the producer intended it to sound, I look forward every morning, to lathering up in my SV Grail bowl and as soon as it arrives, my Giles scuttle.
Like sex at my age, it takes longer, but neither my wife or myself begrudge the time.
