Closed Completed: Pass Around - Tatara Masamune Razor

Evening Andreas. Apologies for the radio silence. I have had 5 shaves with the razor and I would usually report my thoughts after each shave. But it has been a bit of a hectic few days and I have been a bit short of time. So I will share my thoughts, for what they are worth, tomorrow. I have contacted @ajc347 to let him know that I will be sending him the razor tomorrow or Wednesday. I will give you the tracking number once posted Andreas @riverrun.

So my not exactly technical thoughts on the Tatara Masamune razor.
Firstly, I really am a little undecided on the way it looks. It's clearly manufactured to a very high standard. But I think I may be a bit of a traditionalist as far as DE razors are concerned. My Mrs, on the other hand, thinks it's the nicest looking razor she has seen.
It definately feels lovely in the hand. Perfectly weighted and very comfortable with excellent grip.
I had 5 shaves in total, 3 with the closed comb, and 2 with the open comb. The first 2 shaves were leisurely 3 pass weekend efforts with the closed comb using a Polsilver SI Blade. These left me BB smooth and were very comfortable. The following 3 shaves were on weekday mornings when I tend to adopt a 2 pass system. The first, again using the cc and a Polsilver, was very smooth, but I found I was left requiring some considerable touch-ups to achieve a close shave. As a comparison, I used a Fatboy on setting 7 for my next shave, again with a Polsilver, and achieved very nearly BB smooth with 2 very comfortable passes. So on to the closed comb. I was hoping that perhaps it would be a little more efficient than the cc. But 2 passes left me with a fair bit of (grey) stubble to clean up around the goatee area of my chin. It was much the same result when using a Nacet blade.
So in conclusion, this is a very nice razor, and I enjoyed using it. But I have other razors that are just as smooth in use, and are more efficient. I have seen that some of you have noted that it performs extremely well with a feather blade. But I didn't have any so couldn't put that theory to the test. For me then, a good razor for occasional weekend use.

Many thanks to @Paul for making the razor available. And thanks @riverrun for organising the pass around.

Ps. I planned to post the razor to @ajc347 today but have been snowed in on the London/Essex border. So hopefully will post tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

I used the Tatara razor for the first time last night and the first thing that struck me is how well it is made. Everything fits together perfectly and the attention to detail in manufacturing puts it up there with the best razors on the market.

I opted to use the OC head given the amount of stubble that needed to be shifted (as I hadn't shaved for the best part of a week) and it performed excellently.

Two passes were all that were needed and I'm very impressed with the result. It's not as smooth as a Timeless or as aggressive as a Wolfman OC but it felt like it's going to be a great razor nonetheless. [emoji846]

I've had another two shaves with the OC and must say the I'm enjoying it. One more shave with it tonight and then it's onto the SB for a few shaves.

I'm not sure I like the idea of the new box being made out of cork though (as I presume that it will be a lot softer material than the current wooden box).

Quick update as to how I'm getting on with pass around razor.

I've only had chance to get two shaves with the SB (one 2-pass and one OC first pass and SB second pass) so far and must say that I've been impressed with it. It feels smooth and reasonably efficient. It's turned a nice razor into a great one.

I must admit that I had some real concerns when I read about Wayne's handle experience on ATG and have been handling the razor VERY carefully when it's anywhere near the sink.

The only problem I've found so far is the ability to cut my thumb when removing a blade from the top cap as it's quite a tight fit.

I'm planning to have one more shave with the SB over the weekend and then get the razor in the post to @p.b at the start of next week. :)

I've had my final shave with the razor and must say that using this razor has been, for me, an enjoyable experience. :)

I've found the balance between efficiency and harshness to be good - the OC is as efficient as a Gillette NEW and the SB reminds me of a Rockwell 6S on a plate #4.

The only downside for me is the handle and the fact that it can't be swapped out for other handles. It would have been nice to have tried a UFO, BRW or Timeless handle instead of the stock one.

All-in-all, this is definitely a razor I would recommend. :)

Many thanks again to @riverrun and @Paul for organising this pass around. It's been great to try a razor that I'm not sure I would necessarily have thought of purchasing. I've sent it on to Mikey J accordingly and it should hopefully be with him now.
