Arko for performance and Palmolive for scent.. but tbh I threw them both away :S...

Palmolive just doesn't lather well enough when I have a few other decent soaps here; that Arko scent.. I had to put it in a bag in the drawer, it smells like toilet biscuits in a pub toilet, oof.

...like many I have enougth shaving soap and creams to comfortably last me for many, many years and thats after having a clear-out. I still find myself reaching for Arko more often than not when I want to use a shaving stick, which is usally when I am pushed for time. Our unconscious decision making can be a wonderful guide sometimes. The ease of lathering, cushion, thickness and slickness is second to none for me and the scent I find ok. I get neither irritation or drying. Yes the ingredient list is long and there are probably a few nasties amongst them, but as a shaving stick it works for me superbly and better than my Palmolive, Speick, Tabac, Valobra, Lea or La Toja shaving sticks which I also find excellent but not quite matching the performance of Arko...

Why this comparison lasted so long? and it is unnecessary. Because Palmolive stick is 50p available at most supermarkets and Arko is just over a £1 posted when bought from internet( in the UK) or can be bought cheaper in a Turkish supermarkets.
So both products are very cheap and easy to obtain, why argue for something that can be easily and cheaply bought?
I can understand the argument on two very expensive but similar products.
If I decide to try one of these products, I rather buy one each and try and come to my own conclusion, rather than asking here for something that sells for 50p and £1.50

My wife came back from shopping and gave me a stick of Palmolive.

Tried it the other day and seemed fine. You can't really complain for less then 50p

No you can't complain for 49p to be precise!..i've experimented using different methods, applying directly to my face, cutting a disk into a bowl/ grated it into a bowl,/face-lathering,all give superb results..great post shave feeling, "for me anyway", i actually really like the fragrance, but i can understand whay some don't, but for it's performance and price this little wonder performs next to shaving soap 10 times it's price.

Regarding scent, the way I seen it is this:
The soap is on your face for around 10mins at best. Afterwards you will wash it off and the rest goes down the drain.

I love smelling good so I invest my money in bottles of good quality fragrances. No point in paying more than you need to for some good smelling larger. YMMV of course and that's totally alright. I personally have been there, done that and opted for the cheap and cheerful.

Palmolive with DE - fine
Palmolive with Straight razor newbie shave - dried out after about 20 minutes (needed 35) and was not as slick as the best soaps I have got
Arko - never got over the first sniff

I agree with you. Nice to have a nice smell from the soap but it's the aftershave that gives the smell for the day.
