NEW DE SHAVERS - What to buy to get started...

Don't worry we all make mistakes. You are young and impressionable. Think of TSR as a jolly uncle who will sit you on his knee and tell you about the world and all its ups and downs. Ignore the inappropriate touching and listen to the advice and you'll be fine! :D

 Wish that nice big pic was posted BEFORE the wife brought me some

Still with nothing to compare it to it got me started - but then my Arko arrived today so will give that a try tomorrow, still undescided if to shave a slither off into my bowl or try and face lather.

The only use for a shave stick as I see it is if you are going on holiday. Grate it in to a bowl or mug and squash it down. You can then swirl the brush round and easily load it with soap. You can then choose to continue making lather in the bowl or on your face.

I've been loading my brush from the shave stick quick a bit recently and it works a treat for bowl lathering. When using a puck I do most of the loading work with the brush but when using a stick I work the stick into the brush. Just a thought, there's no need to rub the stick on your face.

I shaved a few slivers off into my lather bowl this morning and kinda made the lather whilst loading the brush if that makes sense? the 2 small slivers we completly gone by the time I had made the lather, it seemed to work failrly well, i'll try loading the brush with the stick tomorrow.

I think the bowl I got for lather making is a little too shallowas the lather seems to work its way over the top, so might get the next size up (Jamie Oliver food bowls only £1.49 each I got the 20cl might get the 50cl) then I can grate the stick into the smaller one and try it that way :0)

That's a good method often forgotten.

I actually prefer using Tabac stick to bowl and working the soap directly into the beard and the brush if need be, admittedly the Tabac stick is conveniently packaged whereas most cheap sticks come in a foil rap so it might be best to grate those. Alternatively cut a 1/4" slice and wedge it to the bottom of of a lathering mug or bowl, sticks are usually cheap enough and this method can produce a fairly foolproof lather by countering the usual problem of not using enough soap to begin with. When you think you've used enough of the soap just avoid scrubbing more off by mixing around the bowl.

Just to be clear the WS soap in a bowl is not that same formula as the WS stick.

I think with soaps if you can get a deep bowl to house them in it makes lathering a doddle. I store mine in tupperware containers after milling them in. End result is better lather and cost less than the 'official' bowls.

For me, blades are key, alot of good ones out there. Alot use personnas but i cant abide them. And you cant go wrong with merkur razors

I remember using WS shaving soap 20 years ago when it came in a black bowl. It was not that good at all. But, the good thing with WS and Boots is that they have DE razors available to try out, so the consumer is not bedazzled by all those cartridge gadgets.

I was looking at the price of Gillette Fusion cartridges, at £20 for 4 or is it 5? Yet, for £25.50 you can get the Edwin Jagger chrome razor pictured in the first post (it says it all - brilliant). What a difference in cost for a decent razor.

I definitely think there are more people looking at DE shaving as the cost of cartridges is going through the roof. It is also feels like the cartridge is getting a bit ridiculous as they try to cram more and more blades in!

Yet you sell cartridges on your website. I'm a little confused by this comment. :s

£16.99 for 6, I believe - about £2.90 for a month's worth of shaves.

Or you can buy the handle and two cartridges for £4.99 (Superdrug) making the monthly cost £2.50.

How did you work those prices per shave out? Cartridges would only last 3-4 shaves for me which would mean using 7-8 blades a month if I shave every day.

Fairly obvious how I worked the cost out - even without a calculator or the brains of an Arch Bishop;

One (Proglide) cartridge lasts me a month of daily face and twice-a-week headshaves as well as (as Ant rightly pointed out) the odd tidy-up of my ridiculously large testicles.
