My First Shave with an Open Comb

As far as I'm aware, all the Merkur OC's have the same head. Only the handles differ. I haven't used mine in ages. I'll have to dig it out now...:D
That's good to know, though I went for the 41c because I like a short handle.
Why people think OCs are inherently aggressive I don't know.
From what I've been reading on sotd the iKon SBS is milder on the OC side than the SB side.
Edit: Which really shouldn't surprise anyone.
Blade gap and exposure are the real determinants to aggressiveness, but for some reason I find toothed razors smoother than SBs when the aggression is upped.

Because many shavers agree that on the whole they are more aggressive, including me. The last person I loaned a New LC model said it was the worst shave he's ever had. I won't go that far, but they are great for long straight runs such as cheeks, but far too aggressive for my chin & mouth area. I have never tried a Merkur OC. As well, I even once owned the demure PAA DOC razor which was mild, but I cannot stand OC teeth "gnawing" at my face. I find it disconcerting and annoying. One man's treasure is another's trash they say.

I find that too. For me, my R2 is definitely a smoother shave than my R1 & the Fatip must be one of the smoothest razors you could use...but you'll need to watch that pressure thing :D

I've only tried two modern OCs, the 41c and the Fatip Piccolo. I'm impressed by both.
I wonder if there's a scientific reason for OCs being smoother than SBs. My smoothest DE has teeth and an SB, the Eclipse Red Ring.IMG_20171104_131044.jpg

To be honest, I don't think about "open comb" and "safety guard" too much. I mean, a good OC razor will shave better than a bad one with safety guard and the other way around. The same with aggressiveness. Some razors with safety guards are gonna be aggressive, and some open combs will be very mild. Depends.

Now, Fatip Grande, it's a bit on the more efficient side than other modern razors. I would be able to use it daily, but the thing that annoys me about it is the angle. You need to take a bit steep angle in order for it to cut easily.

Contrary to popular opinion, I've found out that an aggressive razor will almost always work better with a sharper blade. With an efficient razor, you want to get that glide and avoid times when the blade will have trouble getting through the stubble.

This. My favourite razor lately has been a 1906 SR, with a Feather. Smooth and efficient shaves.

It's sad, but I can't recall the last time I shaved with a SB...
Very nice, though I'm not over keen on the first shave with a Feather. I find OCs smoother but I do prefer SEs to DEs.
OTOH just got a 1920 Big Fellow and it shaves by itself.

Yes, Feather are... particular. IME they are great from the first stroke... but that's me.

I have never tried a SE... although I must have a couple. You know, too little time, too many razors...
