Nothing they want to do at this stage. They'd rather pay for it later than now. I had to go almost blind before I had surgery. Mind you, mine went downhill rather quickly...

Hopefully it's a long way off, but the thought of eye surgery is a little scary, some one coming at my eyes is a little unnerving.

Piece of cake. It's the most performed surgery in the UK, I believe. They are quite good at it by now.
I found it quite fascinating, actually. But I'm weird like that.
And the results were just stunning... From nearly blind to full vision in less than 15 minutes..

Take a look around some antique/junk shops. There often are some lovely examples of large magnifying glasses as cheap as chips.

Those three (especially the glare) can point to cataracts. If you are diagnosed with those, get them sorted right away. Don't listen to advice to wait until they get worse and 'affect your life'.
And if you have a choice, get it done at Moorfields and say 'hello' from me.

Definitely eye test. If you don't want to spend the money get a free one (Tesco opticians for example), then get some cheap (reading) glasses on the interweb.
Eye tests can also detect other problems that might not be 'just a sign of age'. After two eye surgeries I'm a lucky and happy bunny again.

Had eye test. Cataract surgery performed. Installed Zeiss Multifocal lenses and now I can see distant planets - around corners. On good days through nylon.

Apparently you can see UV light with synth lenses? Neat!

Another one who's had lenses replaced - it really is a very simple operation although not without risks. For those who are apprehensive about the thought of eye surgery - it's not an issue in that you really can't make out what's going on.

ALso, look a geologist webshops, they usually sell the slightly better gear or have the advice available.

I have to agree and money spent on an eye test is a far better option. Using a magnifying glass is really just denial.

Why not do both? Get your eyes tested and then get yourself a magnifying glass - doing something about age related inability to read small text is not denial, it's the exact opposite.
