Just starting DE: how does this set look?

Everyone will have a different opinion - here is mine
+1 on the EJ DE89 razor, other lower cost razors also mentioned
+1 on styptic pencil (all you should need)
start with a cream not a soap (easy to use for beginner)
try an aftershave balm. Bulldog comes to mind & nice price. Witch Hazel next semster.
make sure your brush handle will feel good in the hand
do not over-think and be happy with your purchase

Body Shop synthetic brush under a tenner
Make your own witch hazel, just add a few drops of whatever essential oil you like the smell of
Real Shaving Co Cream is cheap as chips
Aloe Vera gel is a good post shave and very cheap
Edwin Jagger razor for under £25
Plenty of blade choice, Astra SP are smooth yet sharp

Don't shave if you are in a rush, you'll almost certainly cut yourself

I was hoping to get something that works for bleeding cuts. There's been quite a few times when I'm in a hurry and have to shave. I end up getting cuts which just don't stop bleeding. I read that the Proraso gel is the best thing for that?

I might go down that route with the witch hazel. I'm having a hard time justifying the Thayers. With the Dr Harris, I wanted to get something a bit nicer. I know I can get a Palmolive shaving stick for £0.50 but, honestly, the cost isn't that bad when looking at how long the soap would last. Are there any soaps better at that price point?

More importantly, is there any brushes better than the Omega? I'm looking at roughly that price but might be able to spend a bit more if it's really worth it.

Thanks again for the help! Will definitely let you know how it goes! :)
Boots the chemist sell a styptic stick for less than £2...also I'd recommend looking for a synthetic brush at turn n shave on etsy not sure about the postage costs but the basic clear handle brush is said to be a very good price and a very good knot ! Also look at iherb for Thayers if you use the app to purchase you get $5 off I managed to get 2 bottles with this deal for £15 shipped with no import tax or duties the code is APPS2017 ! I hope this helps

Forgot to mention body shave Macca root shave cream is excellent and it only £8... for the money you really can't beat this cream unless you buy an Italian croap like vitos red in bulk that would work out cheaper !

I use Proraso. A tub lasts months using it every day. Wet the brush and swirling around, but load the brush with a bit more than you think you need. I apply it directly on my face and it builds up a really luxurious lather even in my hard water area.

boots sell real shaving co sets which contain a synthetic brush and a small tube of their cream for £10 and they come up on sale occasionally. From what I've read its not a bad little brush and the cream is great! or if you can wait a week or two, order a yaqi with a handle you like. I wouldn't order on of the 28/30mm brushes as my only brush though

I tried Boots own brand blades .worst ever! Dont go too cheap unless you know from others that the items work, or it will put you off shaving!

Thank you everyone for the advice! The response has been amazing, I honestly didn't expect many replies when I first wrote the post

I've been generously gifted a starter set (which was incredible). It literally has everything I need! I was completely blown away. So, for coming future, I luckily have more than enough.

I'll probably pick up some alum (as many of you suggested). I've had many recommendations for soap but I'm starting with Arko/Palmolive which are great to begin with.

I'm sure I'll upgrade the soap at some point (as it's one of the least expensive parts of kit when considering usage). Based on all the recommendations, I'm planning on going with P&B Imperial Rum. They're also a TSR member which is awesome

I'm really excited to finally start DE and it was made so much easier by all the support and guidance I found here. So, thank you!

P&B are great soaps, I have Imperial Rum, and Spitfire, great news that you have been gifted a starter set. Good luck with the shaving !

I can't remember who it was, but there was someone on here who claimed to have 500 soaps (and there is no reason to doubt him). And he was still open to new purchases.

Check out a lot of the "starting to shave" threads on here under Shaving Help, but there are endless people on this forum who are only too happy to help. Nearly everyone here claims to have been rendered poor by constant shaving purchases, but if opinions are worth something, you're dealing with a bunch of billionaires!
