It is also a case of how much resistance is left in the spring! On any Gibbs razor you may not have the same blade exposure on any given setting because of spring wear, I found that some springs were better than other's, possibly due to how the razor was cleaned or not, how the razor was stored, with the spring under tension or not , ect ect, so most definitely YMMV. And of course beard type will come into play in a big way when talking about any razors efficiency. :) P.

That's correct, it wouldn't be a big problen replacing the spring with a new one off the shelf.
I do make sure though that when I'm done there is no tension on the spring.

A very good practice and anyone with a sprung adjustable razor should follow this practice to ensure their settings remain the same. :) P.
 
Can one of you guys give me the spec or link to a good spring replacement? One of my razors is missing a spring.

if anyone knows how to measure the 'key parameters' or dimensions of the spring it looks like a replacement may be available -

Dimensions:
Outer Diameter, Inner Diameter, Wire Diameter, Free Length, and Solid Height.

  • Free Length is the overall length of a spring in the unloaded position.
  • Solid Height is the length of a compression spring under sufficient load to bring all coils into contact with adjacent coils.
    Spring Rate (stiffness)
  • Spring Rate is the change in load per unit deflection in pounds per inch (lb. /in.) or Newtons per millimetre (N/mm).
    Unit of Measures
  • Lee Spring's Stock Springs are specified in both English (Imperial) or metric units. Be sure to specify the preferred unit of measure when looking for a Stock Spring using Lee Spring's search engines.

Well done for getting the information needed to get a spring ordered from Lee Spring's, the only difficulty I can see is without original specifications from Gibbs it will be guess work when it comes to measuring the "Spring Rate" because most if not all Spring's will be fatigued to a certain degree and any figure that can be assigtainged will be off by some margin. I'm not sure if it is that critical, after all these razors are still working with weakened springs now, it was just something that I thought was worth consideration. :) P.

...yes agreed I suspect determining the 'spring rate' would be a challenge; now we just need the original specs or a NOS one that can be measured...oh well...
