Hi where am I going wrong?

Ill be sure to try that thanks! Had my 4th go today, closest yet, probably as good as can be expected using shaving foam from a pressurised can. Looking forward to the brush and new razor coming :D

Took it slowly today, did 4 passes 1 WTG 2 XTG and 1 ATG where it was worst. Good results. Sometimes I think I'm just scraping the foam off without the blade, think i can work on the angle a bit.

I'm from Yorkshire BTW know theres a few round here! Currently living in Manchester. Thanks everyone!!

That might be the misaligned blade exposure you were talking about. Is the other side more aggressive?
No it looks a little better actually as I used a new razor blade today, I can see the same amount of blade on each side. I think sometimes I'm just angling so badly that its not touching, seems OK once I correct it. Previously with the first blade I wasn't too confident that the blade was aligned well however. Guess Ill get a better idea over time and with the R89 to compare.

You will love the R89, it's in many respects the perfect razor and with proper soap applied with a brush your shave will go from ok to great, looking forward to hearing how you get on with the new gear. :)

Try putting the head flat against your face, handle at 90°, gradually move the handle towards the ground until you feel the blade.

Hi again.

I'd really recommend a shaving soap, or preferably a cream once you have the brush. The problem I had with foam was the air and not knowing where the blade was in relation to the facial hair (not sure if that was just my technique). I noticed remarkable results, once I started using creams and soaps. If I travel abroad, I take a tube of cream or a gel at worst.

When I used the foam, it didn't matter what razor or blade I used the results were always poor.

Off subject, my deepest sympathy for what happened last night in Manchester. Shocking that I woke up to this, this morning.

Let us know how the shaving goes.

Regards

Mark

Hey all, thanks again for your help! I finished the Great Manchester run yesterday and was a little more streamlined in the face region :) It was a great day for the city I think.

Things are going well with the R89 using a Muhle razor that came with it at moment, also tried some taylors of old bond street today, getting it better every-time. Need to get better at lathering, hard to tell what is right when you are starting. Think I was a little too strict before just using one pass with the foam on, a lot of the videos people are doing it multiple strokes if that makes sense. I also seem to be OK going ATG. Still not quite there but better every time, looking forward to trying the other blades also.

What are peoples opinions of the 5 Derby Razor Blades, 10 Personna Razor Blades and 20 Legends London Alum Matchsticks?

Sorry I have turned this into a crazy hello post :D Thankyou all for your help and suggestions!!!!!!!!!!

I wouldn't bother with the matchsticks. At first it feels pretty badass to rip off a match and apply it to a cut but you get a microscopic amount of styptic with each match and they don't really work. It's just a very expensive way of buying a styptic pencil (which only works on tiny cuts anyway).

I've just bought a parker open comb razors and as part of the bundle ( free blades) I am getting some of these sticks. I prefer an actual block, so my friend will be getting them for his wash bag. Although not the brand your discussing, Im not taken by them.

Getting much better now, I realy liked the Derby in the R89 closest shave so far, ordered another 20 packs of derby and the 2 selection boxes I mentioned. Thankyou all for your help, Hopefully I will continue to improve, still experimenting with the lather, v hard to tell what is right untill you know, started adding more water to it.

Just an update on my razor blades, as much to remind myself as anything else. Ive invented a new 5 star rating for the blades, I know its quite subjective and YMMV is key. I'm hereby giving the Double-Decker Choronzon Rating (DDCR) to the Derby and Feather blades used in the R89. I can get a BBS shave with either, I prefer the feel of the Derby, but the Feather seems sharper, I know this isnt scientific and I'm not going to use scientific language. I have also tried the Wilkinsons Sword, I dont like it as much although it seems OK, I also note that it gave a good "quick shave" today using foam from a can and cold water. The reason it doesnt get a double decker is it feels bad when I go ATG with warm water, almost as if it was raising the hairs too much before cutting and it wasn't as comfortable ATG as the Derby and Feather and not as sharp.

So in summary so far

Double Decker Choronzon Rating:
Derby
Feather

OK:
Wilkinsons Sword (very good for a quick cold shave with foam from a can)

My fist blade I'm still comparing things against and might be OK but definitely not DDCR:
Astra

Also the feather blade looks the nicest, but that really doesn't matter.
