Hi where am I going wrong?

I do not want to stick my oar in as Boru62 seems to be doing a good job but if I may make a suggestion? The razor that is almost universally recommended as the perfect starter razor and the one you can use every day for the rest of your shaving life if you wanted to is the Muhle R89. It is inexpensive and really good quality. It's available everywhere too so easy to get hold of. You will not go wrong with one I can assure you. I'm sure you will improve your shaving with one.
I second your opinion on the Muhle R89..a fantastic quality razor..a one i will always have, and shave with.;)

Thanks all! Ill check out the R89 also, more expensive but if I get more use out of it over time thats good! This is always the best part of these things, learning new stuff! Cheers everyone!

Its a learning curve definitely!! Take your time, I would suggest slowing the process right down. Keep the pressure light, that way the blade does the work.

Can't comment on your products as haven't tried them. I would suggest using an oil as a separate layer of protection (works for me but not for everyone).

Enjoy the experience and once you get used to it, you'll wonder how you shaved any other way. As for bowls keep a look out, I do use some of the containers that the soaps come in. As for blade disposal, I tend to put them back in therror container the came in, tape that up and disposal in an old envelope or bag.
Enjoy the site!!

I haven't tried the R89 but I have an EJDE89 and I think they're the same head, if so it's an excellent razor. Slightly more aggressive than the Feather popular but a razor you can pass on to future generations.

Thankyou for your help! Just a question regarding the oil, when do you apply it in the process and what type of oil? Just had my 3rd shave, realy working well this time apart from the ridgeline of the chin esp under the mouth. I guess it takes some time to get the 30 degree angle right. Took it slowly like you said.

Just ordered the R89 from Shave Lounge, was looking at amazon with prime but SL have good customer service (cancelled a previous order :) ) and I think the freebies will be useful for a newbie like myself.

What are peoples opinions of the 5 Derby Razor Blades, 10 Personna Razor Blades and 20 Legends London Alum Matchsticks?

Sorry I have turned this into a crazy hello post :D Thankyou all for your help and suggestions!!!!!!!!!!

I think you should get a sample pack of blades. They're all different and you'll like some and hate others. Blades are very subjective. As far as pre-shave oil, it's not mandatory. Most of the glide, cushion, and protection your face needs will come from the soap or cream that you use. A good hot shower prep is a good place to start. Don't worry about maintaining a 30 degree angle at every point of your shave. You've made a great choice in the R89; it's a very forgiving razor and one you can wield around your face without too much worry. Some good blades to explore are the Polsilver SI, Astra SP, Voskhod, and Perma Sharps, but again, they're subjective. A frequent acronym you'll see on this forum is YMMV, or Your Mileage May Vary, meaning what works for me might not work for you. We're all different. Have fun and welcome to the rabbit hole!

Thanks, I see some sample packs on the shave lounge, might order some:
pack 1:
  • 5 x Perma-Sharp blades
  • 5 x Gillette Sharp Edge blades
  • 5 x Gillette Super Stainless blades
  • 5 x Astra Super Platinum blades
  • 5 x Shark Super Stainless blades
Pack 2:
  • 10 x Feather
  • 10 x Personna
  • 5 Polsilver
  • 5 x Gillette Silver Blue
  • 5 x Wilkinson Sword

I also have coming 5 Derby Razor Blades, 10 Personna Razor Blades with my R89

that would cover Polsilver SI, Astra SP and Perma Sharps, would miss the Voskhod. (just posting here so I can keep track also :p ) Already got 99 more Astras. I guess with the 2 others coming theres no rush to buy the samples yet.

You're covered. :)

Hi again.

I use King of shaves. Or Taylors if I'm feeling flush.

I wash or scrub my face, then whilst still wet, apply the oil, just a bit will do.

I then lather up and do the first pass (shave). Depending on how many days growth I then repeat the lathering (no oil) and shave again.

I follow this with a cold Alum block and a balm. Only layer do I think of adding cologne or aftershave once my skin is moisturisedol.

Add or take away bits as you feel appropriate.
Let me know how you get on.

Regards mark
