Gillette Nacets or Gillette Rubies, which do you prefer?

Rubies for me Paul..my number 1 blade! Nacets a close second though all the Russian blades are great! I am currently using Rapira SS and if you haven't tried them you should..very smooth! I compared them with a Wilkinson Sword blade and it was like night and day...can't get on with the Wilkies...really rough for me.

This YMMV thing is no more evident than when it comes to blades. Every Moscow blade i've tried ( Rapira's Swedish Supersteel, Platinum Lux & Voskhod ) have been rough yet all three St Petersburg blades i've tried ( Rubies, GSB's & Polsilvers ) are my top 3 blades.

+ 1 on the Polsilver.excellent blades, all the russian made blades i've purchased and shaved with have gave me excellent results, but the Polsilver is at the number 1 spot.;)
I like Polsilver IS blades a lot and I like Polsilver SI blades but they imo don't come close to the old Polish (lodz factory) Polsilver stainless ( brown box) super smooth and sharp and I can get more shaves per blade from them.

Bringing the post back on track those Rubies are fab and it's no wonder the Russians want to keep them for themselves, for a time they were quite hard to get hold of but thankfully easier now.

I've read some reviews on the old Polish (lodz factory) Polsilver stainless ,brown box and have all echoed what you've said about them.

Been trialling a few blades that I haven't used before including Nacets and Rubies of which the latter has a significant edge over. Just used a Gillette Platinum for the first time tonight and I found it smooth, sharp and very comfortable. I had to check that I had the blade properly inserted. Early days but I maybe buying a big stash of these.

I have a theory on the Rubie based on my experiences and this guy's review (see below) that this is a special blade in that it has the most advanced coating(s)/sputtering. Why you ask? His initial sharpness test appears dull, but in reality that just is IMO a more advanced & heavy duty coating which takes approx. three shaves to wear down to where most other Gillette blades are after the first shave. The Gillette Platinum (blue/white box) seems a mere one rung just below this. Hence, these two blades cost more as they are made a little more exactingly and are engineered for more shaves.

I have a theory that most fellas haven't tried Rubies which would explain why they're not mentioned much. After all, they're not the easiest blade to find for sale. For me they are simply stunning & well worth tracking down. Luckily we have a vendor here in the UK that usually stocks them.

I'm eager to try them, as love GSB, Platinum, and think Nacet is decent enough.
Which seller?

I think I prefer the Nacet, on balance. The Rubies are exceptional blades though.

Nacet feels nicer straight out the packet. That being said, both give cracking shaves (for me) as do Silver Blues.

That appears to be because they are the sharpest Gillette blade on the initial shave based on the aforementioned linked testing page.

Another "sleeper" by Gillette is the rarely encountered red & black box Stainless:

Here's a in depth look at the Rubie:

Notice that the hone angle is 15.6° – 17° as opposed to the Silver Blue angle of 14.9° – 15.5°. They measure the Astra SP at 16.3° – 16.8° and the Feather Hi-Stainless at 13.8° – 15° respectively. I find this fascinating as obviously they are doing this for a valid reason which appears to be some complex formula based upon geographical location equating beard type plus most likely a host of other factors. I harken back to the fellow on another forum who seemed to either be a Gillette employee or privy to insider info as he mentioned this a few years back. He doesn't post there anymore as the assortment of knuckleheads over there only wanted to dispute everything he said. Too bad as he was certainly a "taproot" of knowledge. He stated, albeit thinly veiled, that the Silver Blue was a new incarnation of the discontinued Russian 7 O'Clock Super Platinum (blue box, not black Indian) when people were paying outlandish prices to Russkie "scalpers" on Ebay.

Just received some Rubies and Nacets in a sample pack. Haven't tried the Nacet yet but quite liking the Rubie so far although first shave with it wasn't great as I bloodied my neck a little.

The Gillette Stainless is indeed a great blade. Primarily sold in Bulgaria and Romania I believe.

Also readily available from Gemstone
