Do I use an aftershave before a post shave balm

Not everyone uses or is aware of allum. I also have very greasy skin, so this alcohol is bad for you propaganda is definitely not applicable.
Quoted the wrong post maybe?

I have no bias against alcohol based aftershaves. I own two and use them. Infrequently, because I am aware of alum ;)

Actually, when thinking about recent SOTD pics, I think I've used Clubman a lot more since I posted the above in February.

I was told by a Consultant Dermatologist that you should NEVER put alcohol based aftershave or cologne on freshly shaved skin as it causes the skin to shrivel and causes it to dry out. Just use a balm to help moisturise the skin as shaving removes some of the skins oils.
I'm guessing you went with a dry skin condition and the "you should NEVER..." comment was regarding your skin type.
What everyone needs to do imo, is find a solution to suit.

The whole point of the AS is to act as disinfectant and astringent. Of course it dries your skin, which is why you apply the moisturising balm after. Allum is drying too.

cold water > allum > cold water > AS > balm > EDT

EDT goes over the balm like @Bogeyman suggested, will last longer. This is why AS, balm and EDT are sold paired with matching scents.

Many use either AS or allum exclusively, I like to use both.

I shave (usually) every two days. After a shave I use a balm, then an EDT.

On the day off I use a moisturiser. I own 2 aftershaves- Old Spice and Pinaud Clubman. But I hardly use them.

I use an alum block for the antiseptic effect, then the balm to moisturize, and the EDTfor scent. I can't see what an aftershave can add to that combination.

Replying to the post above.

New sentence, different subject.

Haha you're a funny one.

To refer to "this alcohol is bad for you propaganda" while quoting my post suggests you believe my post to be said propaganda, does it not?

Hence why I asked if you had quoted the wrong post. I have no issue with your grammar.

I was 24 at the time and I actually went with Impetigo - Impetigo is a common and highly contagious skin infection that causes sores and blisters - and I was told that it would leave my skin thin and that it could possibly mean that I wouldn't be able to shave as it would rip my skin to bits, which it did, so I had a beard for 41 years. I've even heard other shaving professionals say exactly the same thing, But each to his own.

I have a chronic (on going) non-specific skin condition, called eczema when I was a child, it's now called dermititis.
I can only wear natural fibres, (cotton rich to a degree), synth brushes unfortunately are a no-go area.
Splashes cause me no problem, although I do moisturise nightly.
Like I said, it's up to each of us to find what suits, no cap fits all.

I've yet to come across a balm that does anything for me other than leaving my face feeling greasy and itchy. On the other hand an alcohol-based aftershave splash works very well especially if it has a touch of menthol. The splash leaves my face feeling clean, refreshed and irritation-free. Skip the balm.
